Topic: Service from Abundance [Monday, 10th April 2017]

But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. Luke 22:27

Service is work done by one person to benefit another; an act of help or assistance. To serve simply means to do something to the benefit of another, usually in a lower status than the one serving. The norm in life is for the younger to serve the older, and the lesser to serve the greater. For those of us that have younger siblings, we know that we cannot clear the place where our younger sibling ate, or wash the utensils used by them, as a traditional norm. Even more relatable is when an errand (especially a menial job) is to be sent, the younger one is the first to be called for such.

Christ however instructs us, his followers, differently. He says the greater amongst us should serve the lesser. This may offend some persons, as they would reason “why should I, ten years in ministry, fifteen years in the Lord, be a servant to someone that is just two years in ministry?” Christ said in Luke 12:48 “…for unto whomsoever much is given, of him much is required…” As believers, when God has elevated us above some, it is our duty to use such elevation to their benefit, and not to ours. We do not serve because we are lesser, we are servants because we’ve been given so much, and we have knowledge of the things we’ve been given.

Christ did not just instruct, He practised it. In John 13:3-5 “Jesus knowing that the Father has given all things to his hands, and that he was come from God, and went back to God; He riseth up from supper, and laid aside his garments; and took a towel , and girded himself. After which he poureth water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel wherewith he was girded.” He could have sent one of the disciples to wash the feet of the others, but He didn’t, because he knew he had received all things from the Father. Abundance should propel you to serve.

Keep winning daily.

Wise Action:

Whenever you are placed in a position  of authority or leadership, don’t boss over people under you, but serve them, and ask God to daily help you serve others with the abundance you have received from Him.
