TOPIC: Wealth Does Not Make Life Count
READ: Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 (NKJV)
- I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
- And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised.
- I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all [is] vanity and grasping for the wind.
- [What is] crooked cannot be made straight, And what is lacking cannot be numbered.
- I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.”
- And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.
- For in much wisdom [is] much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.
THE MESSAGE:
It is clear from our reading today that king Solomon was wealthy and wise (velse 16), yet he considered every struggle under heaven as extreme travail. He noted that he had estate and had great experience of wisdom and knowledge but concluded that all the toiling of man under the sun is vexation of spirit. In other words, all labour and struggles are just meaningless; they are not what man should live for. Beloved, it is painful to note that the same things many people are doing everything good and bad to acquire is here described by Solomon, who enjoyed real wealth, as vanity and vexation of spirit. It is very crucial for Christians to check who they are living for in this temporary world.
Some children of God are busy each day running after gold and silver while paying little or no attention to their salvation and proper journey to heaven. Without doubt, God has given us all things richly to enjoy in this life but nothing guarantees peace, joy and eternal rest more than our Christian sanctity. Only those who live for the Lord here will reign with Him in His everlasting Kingdom. Money, wealth, property and material possessions are important in our daily life’s activities but we must not make them the reasons for our existence. If only in this life we have hope in Christ, we are of all men to be pitied most (1 Corinthians 12:19).
PRAYER: Father, my confidence is in You; not in my possessions. You are my hope of everlasting life.
