READ: 2 Samuel 2:8-11 (NKJV)
- But Abner the son of Ner, commander of Saul’s army, took Ishbosheth the son of Saul and brought him over to Mahanaim;
- and he made him king over Gilead, over the Ashurites, over Jezreel, over Ephraim, over Benjamin, and over all Israel.
- Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, [was] forty years old when he began to reign over Israel, and he reigned two years. Only the house of Judah followed David.
- And the time that David was king in Hebron over the house of Judah was seven years and six months.
THE MESSAGE:
There is no need to shy away from the truth that when God promotes a man, everyone around may rejoice but not all will do so sincerely. There are different reasons for people’s ill-feelings against the success of others. Some wish they were the ones being celebrated while others can just be annoyed and unnecessarily mischievous against the successful person. The situation of David reveals to us that Abner never wished David well. He quickly used his military power to install Ishbosheth, Saul’s son, as king, as soon as he knew that the people of Judah had enthroned David as their king. Abner was well aware that God had promised deliverance for the entire Israel by the hand of David (2 Samuel 3:18), yet he planned and enthroned Ishbosheth over Gilead, the Ashurites, Jezreel, Ephraim, Benjamin and over all Israel (2 Samuel 2:9).
Beloved, note that everyone will not support your success; no matter how friendly or accommodating you are. As soon as God opens a door of promotion or progress to you, be prepared that not everyone who comes around to rejoice with you is truly happy with you. Oppositions will arise, whether immediately or later. The life of David shows a practical way of handling such situations. Never join in the game of mischief. Remain steadfast and hold your peace as you face your life and the obligations of your new status. Never try to pay people back in their own coin. Allow God to fight for you as He did for David and gave him peace all around. If you do not want opposition, then, do not pray for success.
PRAYER: Father, give me victory over every opposition, in Jesus’ Name.
