RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 14 September 2025 TOPIC: The Hypostatic Union

OPENING PRAYER: Lord Jesus, help me to comprehend Your varying, yet distinct nature. (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 14 September 2025 HYMN)

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should review the previous week’s lesson.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Hebrews 4:14-16 (KJV)
14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.

15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

MEMORY VERSE: “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.” – John 1:14 (KJV)

LESSON INTRODUCTION: The concept of hypostatic union states that Jesus Christ is both fully God and fully man. He is simultaneously perfectly divine and perfectly human, having two complete and distinct natures at once. Jesus had always been God (John 8:58, 10:30), but at the incarnation, Jesus became a human being (John 1:14).

TEACHER’S DIARY

LESSON AIM: To understand and appreciate the dual nature of Jesus Christ being fully God and fully man, and to recognize the significance of this doctrine in the Christian faith.

a. Know what the Hypostatic Union means.

b. Identify biblical pieces of evidence supporting the doctrine.

c. Understand Jesus’ Divine and Human Natures.

d. Reflect on how the understanding of Jesus’ dual nature impacts their personal faith and daily life.

TEACHING PLAN: To achieve the above-stated objectives, the teacher should:

Let us……..V14b.

B. We do not have a High Priest who:

i………V15a.

ii. But He was……..V15b.

C. We should therefore boldly…………V16.

LESSON OUTLINES

  1. HIS DIVINE NATURE
  2. HIS HUMAN NATURE

LESSON OUTLINE 1: HIS DIVINE NATURE

A. The scripture is clear that Jesus is God (John 20:28; Titus 2:13).

  1. Jesus claimed the divine name “I am” (John 8:58) and did things that only God can do (Mark 2:3-7).
  2. He operated in the power of His divinity (John 11:43-44; Matthew 14:18-21).
  3. He claimed divine authority (Matthew 28:18).
  4. Jesus is God’s Son in that He was conceived by the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35). But that does not mean Jesus did not exist before He was conceived. Jesus has always existed (John 8:58).

B. An affirmation of the divinity of Jesus is required to be saved (Romans 10:9).

  1. The apostle John provided a sober warning that those who deny Christ’s true humanity are promoting the doctrine of the antichrist (2 John 1:7).
  2. The statement “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30) confirms Jesus’ divine nature, which includes omnipotence (Hebrews 1:1-4), omniscience (John 2:25), and perfection (2Corinthians 5:21).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Share a personal reason you believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: HIS HUMAN NATURE

A. The humanity of Jesus is as important as His deity. Jesus was born as a human being while still being divine.

  1. While the Godhead has existed and reigned from all eternity (Romans 1:20), the second Person of the Trinity, the Son, took on human flesh at a particular point in time (Luke 1:35; 1 Timothy 3:16).
  2. When Jesus was conceived, He became a human being in addition to being God (John 1:1, 14).
  3. Jesus became a human being to identify with us in our struggles (Hebrews 2:17-18).
  4. More importantly, so that He could die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins (Galatians 3:13).

B. Though He is fully God, Jesus (being fully human) experienced the full range of human existence: weaknesses, physical limitations, emotions, and temptations. For instance:

  1. Jesus became hungry (Matthew 21:18) and fatigued (John 4:6).
  2. He was sorrowful at some point (Mark 14:34).
  3. He also socialised (John 2:1-5).
  4. He showed compassion to those in need (Matthew 9:36).
  5. He experienced the pain of betrayal (Luke 22:21, 47-48).

C. The humanity of Jesus enabled Him to be “tempted in every way, just as we are, yet without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Hence:

  1. He suffered for us (1 Peter 4:1).
  2. He was made poor (2 Corinthians 8:9).
  3. He was despised (Isaiah 53:3).
  4. He suffered physical pain and endured the sorrows of a lingering and cruel death (Hebrews 12:2).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: What other things in the scriptures point to Jesus’ humanity?

CONCLUSION: The evidences about the dual nature of Jesus Christ abound as biblical truths that cannot be denied.

EVALUATION: What aspect of God’s divinity stands out for you?

CLOSING PRAYER: Jesus, You know what it feels like to be human without sin. Help me to walk before You and be perfect.

ASSIGNMENT: Mention two (2) attributes that depict the divine nature of Jesus Christ (2×5=10 Marks).
