TOPIC: The Oxygen Of Service (DCLM Daily Manna 16 October 2025)
KEY VERSE: “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them” (Numbers 8:5,6).
TEXT: Numbers 8:5-19 (KJV)
5 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,
6 Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them.
7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: Sprinkle water of purifying upon them, and let them shave all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and so make themselves clean.
8 Then let them take a young bullock with his meat offering, even fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin offering.
9 And thou shalt bring the Levites before the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt gather the whole assembly of the children of Israel together:
10 And thou shalt bring the Levites before the Lord: and the children of Israel shall put their hands upon the Levites:
11 And Aaron shall offer the Levites before the Lord for an offering of the children of Israel, that they may execute the service of the Lord.
12 And the Levites shall lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks: and thou shalt offer the one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering, unto the Lord, to make an atonement for the Levites.
13 And thou shalt set the Levites before Aaron, and before his sons, and offer them for an offering unto the Lord.
14 Thus shalt thou separate the Levites from among the children of Israel: and the Levites shall be mine.
15 And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tabernacle of the congregation: and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for an offering.
16 For they are wholly given unto me from among the children of Israel; instead of such as open every womb, even instead of the firstborn of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto me.
17 For all the firstborn of the children of Israel are mine, both man and beast: on the day that I smote every firstborn in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for myself.
18 And I have taken the Levites for all the firstborn of the children of Israel.
19 And I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and to his sons from among the children of Israel, to do the service of the children of Israel in the tabernacle of the congregation, and to make an atonement for the children of Israel: that there be no plague among the children of Israel, when the children of Israel come nigh unto the sanctuary.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
Robert Murray McCheyne, the Scottish preacher, once affirmed, “In great measure, according to the purity and perfections of the instrument, will be the success. It is not great talents God blesses so much as great likeness to Jesus. A holy minister is an awful weapon in the hand of God.”
The work of God requires so much seriousness and carefulness that it takes true holiness and consecration to offer acceptable and fruitful service in His vineyard. The importance of purity before service is thus illustrated vividly in the cleansing ceremony that preceded the ordination into tabernacle service for the Levites. The ceremony commenced with the levites being sprayed with water of purification. Then, they shaved their entire body and washed their clothes before offering the prescribed sacrifices to God. The high point of the Levites’ consecration is when the Israeli congregation laid their hands on them, signifying their release and sacrifice to the Lord. The instructive metaphor here conveys a message of absolute surrender, a total break from past sinful lifestyle, and a commitment to a life of purity. Cleansing comes before service. It is, therefore, inconsistent with God’s demands to claim to serve Him while still indulging in sin.
Additionally, the position of the levites speaks of a people who accept to be living sacrifices to God. The spectacle of the congregation laying hands on them is evidence of their devotedness and self-effacement. They were willing to serve, though they knew they would be assistants perpetually to Aaron and his sons to do the work of the tabernacle. No matter how well or how long they served, they would never be elevated to the priesthood. Then, they must not pursue any secular ambitions and were not allotted any inheritance of land in Israel. They were consecrated to God, dead to selfish ambition, and contented to serve in their God appointed roles in the tabernacle.
God expects the kind of attitude demonstrated by the levites from every one of us as we engage in His service. We are called to present our bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is our reasonable service. This will demand that we “cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God” (2 Corinthians 7:1)
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
Acceptable service is fuelled by the fire of consecration and purity.
