1 And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the Lord God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word.
2 And the word of the Lord came unto him, saying,
3 Get thee hence, and turn thee eastward, and hide thyself by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
4 And it shall be, that thou shalt drink of the brook; and I have commanded the ravens to feed thee there.
5 So he went and did according unto the word of the Lord: for he went and dwelt by the brook Cherith, that is before Jordan.
6 And the ravens brought him bread and flesh in the morning, and bread and flesh in the evening; and he drank of the brook.
7 And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land.
INTRODUCTION: Prayer is a powerful tool for believers to exercise spiritual authority and establish dominion. Dominion, as God’s original intention for mankind (Genesis 1:26), involves ruling and having authority over creation. This dominion is not just physical but spiritual, requiring a connection with God. Through prayer, believers gain access to divine strategies, power and intervention, allowing them to overcome challenges and enforce God’s will on earth.
LESSON OUTLINE
- BIBLICAL EXAMPLES
- THE HOW
1. BIBLICAL EXAMPLES
Some biblical examples of people who had dominion through prayers include:
- Jacob: His persistent prayer and wrestling with an angel led to a transformation in his identity and a shift from deceit to divine favour, securing dominion over his life and future (Genesis 32:24-28).
- Daniel: Through his unwavering commitment prayer, Daniel gained dominion in a hostile environment. His prayers led to divine intervention, protecting him from lions and prompting the king to acknowledge God’s sovereignty (Daniel 6:10-23).
- Elijah: His fervent prayers brought down fire from heaven and called for national repentance, demonstrating God’s power and authority and showing that the prayers of the righteous are effective (1 Kings 18:36-39; James 5:16-18).
- Hannah: Her heartfelt prayers and faith resulted in the miraculous birth of Samuel, who fulfilled God’s purpose for Israel. She had dominion over her situation (1 Samuel 1:10-20).
- Jesus: In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus’ prayer aligned His will with God’s, giving Him the strength to face the cross and secure victory over sin and death (Luke 22:39-44).
2. THE HOW
Key principles for effective prayer and dominion through prayer include:
- Pray with Faith: Approach God with confidence and trust in His ability to answer your prayers (Mark 11:24).
- Pray According to God’s Will: Effective prayers align with God’s word and will, which requires studying the Bible and seeking the Holy Spirit’s guidance (1 John 5:14-15).
- Pray Persistently: Persistent prayers demonstrate faith and dependence on God, leading to breakthroughs (Luke 18:1-8).
- Pray in the Spirit: Praying in the Holy Ghost strengthens communication with God beyond human capability (Ephesians 6:18; Romans 8:2 27).
- Live Righteously: A righteous lifestyle enhances the effectiveness of prayer, while sin hinders it (Psalm 66:18). Holiness is key to having dominion through prayer (James 5:16).
- Incorporate Thanksgiving: Gratitude and worship magnify God’s power and shift our focus to Him (Philippians 4:6).
CONCLUSION: Prayer is the key to transforming situations, achieving victory and walking in dominion.

FURTHER READINGS:
Sunday: Genesis 32:24-28 (KJV)
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day. 25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him. 26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. 27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob. 28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
Monday: Ephesians 6:18 (KJV)
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Tuesday: 1 Samuel 1:10-20 (KJV)
10 And she was in bitterness of soul, and prayed unto the Lord, and wept sore. 11 And she vowed a vow, and said, O Lord of hosts, if thou wilt indeed look on the affliction of thine handmaid, and remember me, and not forget thine handmaid, but wilt give unto thine handmaid a man child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and there shall no razor come upon his head. 12 And it came to pass, as she continued praying before the Lord, that Eli marked her mouth. 13 Now Hannah, she spake in her heart; only her lips moved, but her voice was not heard: therefore Eli thought she had been drunken. 14 And Eli said unto her, How long wilt thou be drunken? put away thy wine from thee. 15 And Hannah answered and said, No, my lord, I am a woman of a sorrowful spirit: I have drunk neither wine nor strong drink, but have poured out my soul before the Lord. 16 Count not thine handmaid for a daughter of Belial: for out of the abundance of my complaint and grief have I spoken hitherto. 17 Then Eli answered and said, Go in peace: and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition that thou hast asked of him. 18 And she said, Let thine handmaid find grace in thy sight. So the woman went her way, and did eat, and her countenance was no more sad. 19 And they rose up in the morning early, and worshipped before the Lord, and returned, and came to their house to Ramah: and Elkanah knew Hannah his wife; and the Lord remembered her. 20 Wherefore it came to pass, when the time was come about after Hannah had conceived, that she bare a son, and called his name Samuel, saying, Because I have asked him of the Lord.
Wednesday: Romans 8:26-27 (KJV)
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
Thursday: Philippians 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Friday: 1 Kings 18:36-39 (KJV)
36 And it came to pass at the time of the offering of the evening sacrifice, that Elijah the prophet came near, and said, Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, let it be known this day that thou art God in Israel, and that I am thy servant, and that I have done all these things at thy word. 37 Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the Lord God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again. 38 Then the fire of the Lord fell, and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood, and the stones, and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench. 39 And when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces: and they said, The Lord, he is the God; the Lord, he is the God.
Saturday: Luke 18:1-8 (KJV)
1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint; 2 Saying, There was in a city a judge, which feared not God, neither regarded man: 3 And there was a widow in that city; and she came unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary. 4 And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man; 5 Yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me. 6 And the Lord said, Hear what the unjust judge saith. 7 And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them? 8 I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
ASSIGNMENT: Mention five ‘mountains’ you have moved through prayer (2×5=10 Marks).
