BIBLE READING: 1 Samuel 3:11-14 (KJV)
11 And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle.
12 In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end.
13 For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not.
14 And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli’s house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever.
MESSAGE:
Today, I want to establish that even though God is love, He can be provoked to anger and punish those who offend Him. A good example is found in today’s Bible reading, where Eli’s sons, Hophni and Phinehas, offended God. God had waited patiently for them to repent but when He saw that they constantly reproached Him through their actions, He brought His judgment upon them.
Beloved, you must understand that even though we serve a loving God, He is also a Consuming Fire. A Yoruba adage says, “The same teeth a dog uses to play with its puppy is the same teeth it uses to bite the puppy when it does wrong.” In the same vein, God will not fail to chastise His children when they go wrong.
My dear child, God loves you, but He will get angry when you take His mercy for granted and start misbehaving. Today’s memory verse says that His anger is for a moment, which means that when a fellow genuinely stops sinning, God’s anger will stop, and He will relate with the fellow as if he or she never sinned.
KEY POINT:
Do not take God’s love for granted; He is also a Consuming Fire.
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Isaiah 51:1-53:12, Ephesians 5:1-33
HYMN 60 – Most Ancient Of All Mysteries
1 Most ancient of all mysteries,
Before Thy throne we lie;
Have mercy now, most merciful,
Most holy Trinity.
2 When heav’n and earth were yet unmade,
When time was yet unknown,
Thou in Thy bliss and majesty
Didst live and love alone.
3 Thou wert not born; there was no fount
From which Thy Being flowed;
There is no end which Thou canst reach;
But Thou art simply God.
4 How wonderful creation is,
The work which Thou didst bless,
And O what then must Thou be like,
Eternal loveliness!
5 O listen then, most pitiful,
To Thy poor creature’s heart:
It blesses Thee that Thou art God,
That Thou art what Thou art.
6 Most ancient of all mysteries,
Still at thy throne we lie;
Have mercy now, most merciful,
Most holy Trinity.
