TOPIC: Gaius, A Brother Indeed!

READ: 3 John 1:1-8 (NKJV)

  1. THE ELDER, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:
  2. Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.
  3. For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth [that is] in you, just as you walk in the truth.
  4. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.
  5. Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,
  6. who have borne witness of your love before the church. [If] you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,
  7. because they went forth for His name’s sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.
  8. We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.

THE MESSAGE:

Gaius was probably a companion of John and a faithful member of the Church. He was prominent enough to have been the addressee of this 3rd epistle. He was committed to the work of God and perhaps seen as the face of the Church. John praised him for showing unselfish devotion to Christ, by providing accommodations for God’s traveling servants. Gaius expended his resources to care for God’s servants. Little wonder, the manner of John’s prayer for him.

Gaius, no doubt, was spiritually healthy. The NLT says: Dear friend, I am praying that all is well with you and that your body is as healthy as I KNOW your soul is. Verse 3 sums it up: “Some of the brothers traveling by have made me very happy by telling me that your life stays clean and true; and that you are living by the standards of the Gospel. Beloved, what is your testimony before the brethren? Can it provoke further prayers on your behalf; just like John did for Gaius when he said: “I wish that thou mayest prosper in all things and be in health…”

PRAYER: Lord, may my testimony be soul-lifting and life-changing.
