TOPIC: The Third Temptation Of Jesus
READ: Luke 4:9-13 (NKJV)
9 And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:
10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:
11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
THE MESSAGE:
After the devil had suffered two defeats from Jesus, one would think that the devil should give up. But this was not the case. He took Jesus to the pinnacle of the temple in Jerusalem. Here, he wanted to show Jesus that he too could quote from the Scriptures. He requested Jesus to throw Himself down from that high point if He was the Son of God. In fact, he urged Him to do this by quoting Psalm 91:11-12 which says, “For He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you in all your ways. In their hands they shall bear you up, lest you dash your foot against a stone.” Jesus promptly replied the devil that “It has been said, you shall not tempt the Lord your God” (Deuteronomy 6:16). The devil had had enough and left in shame.
From our text, Jesus teaches us that no matter how long temptation lasts or how many times it occurs, believers need to stand firm on the Word of God, and resist. Jesus won decisively over the devil. May you also win your battles against the devil, and may you rely on the word of God in your heart whenever temptations come! As you resist the devil in your heart, he must flee after a while (1 Pet. 5:8-9a).
PRAYER: Dear Father, help me to win by Your word in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
