TOPIC – Financial Discipline (Open Heaven for Teens, 22 October 2026)
MEMORISE: There is treasure to be desired and oil in the dwelling of the wise; but a foolish man spendeth it up. – Proverbs 21:20
BIBLE READING: Proverbs 6:6-8
6 Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
7 Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
8 Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
MESSAGE:
Saving money may not seem important to Some young people, but the truth is that there is wisdom in storing up resources for the future. It is not only adults who need financial discipline. You should start learning to save up portions of whatever money you receive because you will soon become an adult. Financial discipline is an essential life skill and a way to honour God with your resources. Someone once said, “Saving Saves” and I believe it does, as it helps to Sort out financial emergencies.

A Yoruba adage says, “Don’t eat with your ten fingers.” This implies that you shouldn’t use all your resources at once, but you should always Save some for the future. This principle is demonstrated in the lives of the ants as seen in today’s Bible reading. I encourage you to take a cue from them, as they spend time planning for their future. They save food in the summer, which will become their saving grace in winter.
My dear child, you can cultivate a savings culture by setting savings goals, which can be daily, weekly, monthly, or as often as you receive money. Also, create a budget to help you allocate your allowances or earnings in the right proportions for your needs. This will help you reduce reckless spending and help you to remain financially disciplined. Be wise; don’t eat with your ten fingers.
REFLECTION:
Do you have a savings culture?
BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Luke 4:33-44; Joshua 14-15
HYMN 67: I’m Pressing On The Upward Way
1 l’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining everyday;
Still praying as I onward bound
“Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.”
Chorus:
Lord, lift me up and let me stand,
By faith, on Heaven’s table-land;
Where love, and joy, and light
abound,
Lord, plant my feet on higher
ground.
2 My heart has no desire to stay
Where doubts arise, and fears
dismay;
Though some may dwell where
these abound,
My constant aim is higher ground.
3 Beyond the mist I fain would rise,
To rest beneath unclouded skies,
Above earth’s turmoil peace is found
By those who dwell on higher ground.
4 | long to scale the utmost height,
Though rough the way, and hard the fight,
My song, while climbing, shall resound
Lord, lead me on to higher ground.
5 Lord, lead me up the mountain side
I dare not climb without my Guide;
And, heaven gained, I’ll gaze around,
With grateful heart from higher ground.
