TOPIC: Vanity Of Vanities; All Is Vanity

READ: Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 (NKJV)

  1. The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.
  2. “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all [is] vanity.”
  3. What profit has a man from all his labor In which he toils under the sun?
  4. [One] generation passes away, and [another] generation comes; But the earth abides forever.
  5. The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, And hastens to the place where it arose.
  6. The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit.
  7. All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea [is] not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again.
  8. All things [are] full of labor; Man cannot express [it.] The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.
  9. That which has been [is] what will be, That which [is] done is what will be done, And [there is] nothing new under the sun.
  10. Is there anything of which it may be said, “See, this [is] new”? It has already been in ancient times before us.
  11. [There is] no remembrance of former [things,] Nor will there be any remembrance of [things] that are to come By [those] who will come after.

THE MESSAGE:

There seems to be little or no disagreement as to who wrote the book of Ecclesiastes. It is generally believed to have been written by Solomon, the son of David. Without a doubt, in his time, Solomon was the wisest king that this world had produced; he was also the richest. King Solomon enjoyed life at its apex. He saw it all; had it all; and enjoyed it all (verse 16; 1 Kings 3:12-13). He was in the best position to make known by the Spirit of the Lord, the positive and negative impacts of a life of wealth. His conclusion was “vanity of vanities; all is vanity. What profit has a man of all his labour which he takes under the sun? One generation passes away, and another generation comes: but the earth abides forever” (verses 2-4).

Beloved, while it is crucial for all Christians to be hardworking; it is also important to know that nothing is worth living or dying for, except Jesus Christ and his mission. Some of those who lived and laboured for other things apart from the kingdom of Christ; have been forgotten, even by their immediate family members. That which we cherish today will definitely become useless tomorrow. There is actually no need to use the blood or pain of a fellow human being as a ladder to becoming rich or famous. Those who do so do not only die untimely but are also forgotten. The only means of making our lives count before God is to live in Jesus Christ and prepare for eternal life. Life is all vanity without Christ.

PRAYER: Father, give me the grace I need to make my life meaningful in Christ, Amen!
