READ: Colossians 1:1-6 (NKJV)

  1. Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, and Timothy our brother,
  2. To the saints and faithful brethren in Christ [who are] in Colosse: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
  3. We give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, praying always for you,
  4. since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of your love for all the saints;
  5. because of the hope which is laid up for you in heaven, of which you heard before in the word of the truth of the gospel,
  6. which has come to you, as [it has] also in all the world, and is bringing forth fruit, as [it is] also among you since the day you heard and knew the grace of God in truth;

THE MESSAGE:

Paul described the Christians at Colossae as “God’s Holy people.” They are also described as “faithful brothers and sisters” (verse 2). What qualities could a community of people have for them to be described by God as “holy” and “faithful”? There are certain qualities that are noticeable in the Colossian Christians, qualities that each of us should seek to be known by. The first is faith in Christ (verse 4a): This made these Christians to stand out as distinct before God and before men.

Note that no man or woman can be recognized by God as worthy of commendation on the basis of anything else other than faith in Christ. No one can come to God and be accepted by Him without faith in Christ. Another quality of this people was their love for all God’s people (verse 4). Faith in Christ can only be genuine and effective if it expresses itself in unconditional love towards people. “….and if I have faith that can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing” (1 Corinthians 13:2b). Furthermore, these were a people whose hope was heaven. In other words, to be recognized as holy before God, we must constantly live with eternity in view. We are not to live carelessly or recklessly, but each day loving God and man and seeking to please God in all our ways.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please help me live to please You, Amen!
