TOPIC: A Word For Every Family Member

READ: Ephesians 6:1-9 (NKJV)

  1. Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.
  2. “Honor your father and mother,” which is the first commandment with promise:
  3. “that it may be well with you and you may live long on the earth.”
  4. And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.
  5. Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ;
  6. not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart,
  7. with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men,
  8. knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether [he is] a slave or free.
  9. And you, masters, do the same things to them, giving up threatening, knowing that your own Master also is in heaven, and there is no partiality with Him.

THE MESSAGE:

Today is Children’s Day – a day set aside to celebrate children and as well remind parents of their role in the lives of their children. The passage today places a demand on every member of the family. To the children, the Lord demands that they obey and honour their parents. This is very critical because in a world of ‘damaging liberty’, children need the guidance and protection of their parents. In response, they are to obey and honour these parents. On the other hand, parents should not provoke or frustrate their children, instead they must bring them up in the instruction of the Lord. Parents should see children as a gift from the Lord and treat them as such (Psalm 127:3).

To servants in a family, the Lord demands sincerity in their service – they should not do their work with eye service by trying to impress their master through pretence. On the contrary, they should serve from a sincere heart as unto the Lord. Also, masters should treat their servants with some respect, knowing that God is the Master of all. These definite instructions for various family relationships encourage a godly family setting where each member fulfils their roles with love, integrity, and a commitment to following God’s principles.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please bless every member of our families, Amen!
