TOPIC – Consider Things That Matter
READ: Proverbs 30:1-10 (NKJV)
- The words of Agur the son of Jakeh, [his] utterance. This man declared to Ithiel — to Ithiel and Ucal:
- Surely I [am] more stupid than [any] man, And do not have the understanding of a man.
- I neither learned wisdom Nor have knowledge of the Holy One.
- Who has ascended into heaven, or descended? Who has gathered the wind in His fists? Who has bound the waters in a garment? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What [is] His name, and what [is] His Son’s name, If you know?
- Every word of God [is] pure; He [is] a shield to those who put their trust in Him.
- Do not add to His words, Lest He rebuke you, and you be found a liar.
- Two [things] I request of You (Deprive me not before I die):
- Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches — Feed me with the food allotted to me;
- Lest I be full and deny [You,] And say, “Who [is] the LORD?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.
- Do not malign a servant to his master, Lest he curse you, and you be found guilty.
THE MESSAGE:
God is infinite, and a result of this, certain aspects of His nature will always remain a mystery (verses 2-4). We can only know God as He has revealed Himself to us, mostly through His words (verse 5). To attempt to add to what has been written is unacceptable.
The writer of our text today specifically makes it clear that God will rebuke any person who attempts to add to His word because such a person is a liar (verse 6). Take another look at verses 7-9 and reflect deeply on what the writer requested from God before he dies. Asking God to make him to be honest and not to allow him to be too poor or too rich shows that the writer desired to be focused in his purpose for living.
In life, when purpose is not well defined, abuse is unavoidable. Who are you struggling to please in this life? Let the desire to please and serve God be central in all your activities of life. Devote time daily to know God more and more through His word. Perfect peace and joy only come when one is living a God-approved life. Be wise to know the things that count in your life.
PRAYER: Help me Lord, to remain faithful in my fellowship with You, today and always, Amen!
