TOPIC: Though You May Remember But Don’t Dwell On Your Past

READ: Haggai 2:1-3 (NKJV)

  1. In the seventh [month,] on the twenty-first of the month, the word of the LORD came by Haggai the prophet, saying:
  2. “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to the remnant of the people, saying:
  3. ‘Who is left among you who saw this temple in its former glory? And how do you see it now? In comparison with it, [is this] not in your eyes as nothing?

THE MESSAGE:

In our passage, Haggai asked the people, “Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory?” (verse 3). This comparison between the magnificent former temple and its current, less impressive state might have brought feelings of regret and discouragement. However, God does not dwell on the past but encourages His people to move beyond the past and focus on the blessings He promises in the present and future. It’s okay to acknowledge and even learn from the past.

However, dwelling on it can hinder our present and future growth. God’s presence and blessings are available to us today, regardless of past experiences or circumstances. Focus on what you can control and how you can contribute to building something positive in the present. Don’t wait for ideal circumstances to begin building anew. Start with small, intentional steps, trusting that God will bless and guide your efforts.

Again, today’s text reminds us that while the past plays a role in shaping who we are, it does not define our potential. By shifting our focus from the comparison of what is gone and what is now, to present action and trusting in God’s presence, we can embrace the opportunities for growth and rebuild what is before us.

ACTION: Put your past in the past and focus on your present while trusting God for the future
