KEY VERSE: “I will remember the works of the LORD; surely I will remember thy wonders of old” (Psalm 77:11).

TEXT: Psalm 77:11-14 (KJV)

11 I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.

12 I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.

13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God?

14 Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength among the people.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

The dawn of each New Year provides a sure platform for critical sober reflection. Here’s how the man of God, Fredrick Edward Marsh (1858-1931), an avid student of the word of God and a prolific author, described what the Christian can see when he looks back: “The deliverance the Lord has wrought, the way He has led us, the blessings He bestowed, the victories He won for us, and the encouragements He has given.” This, indeed, is “Ebenezer. Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.”

From the text, Asaph, a Levite singer, prophet and poet, who served in King David’s court, writes in today’s Psalm through divine inspiration, on the need for us to reflect on God’s past faithfulness. He delves far into the past, in his reflections and meditations, to recall the wonders of God. He credits God for the numerous unmerited victories won for Israel. He apparently had observed, from his vantage point at King David’s palace, how Israel was preserved by the mercies of God in battles, where all hope of success was lost, as Israel confronts enemy nations who were far superior in military strength.

As day one of the New Year breaks, after the noise of the deafening fireworks and the night revellers has subsided, take a moment to reflect on the kindness of God, that has seen you through till this day. Recall what appears to have been the finest moments in the past year, which, we now should frankly admit, was made possible by divine mercies, and not by our intelligence, or our ability to manoeuvre through the maze of life’s unalterable challenges. It was not also due to our prowess in learning, nor our human creativity. Remember that some folks who were much smarter than you, couldn’t make it into the New Year.

How we need a quieter moment still to renew our commitment to God. One good model for a holistic assessment is the SWOT analysis, where our strength is paired with our weaknesses and our opportunities are stood side by side with the threats in the environment. We must realise that God is greater than our weaknesses and the threats in the environment. With God on our side in the New Year, we shall triumph by His grace and all shall be well. Happy New Year!
