TEXT: Luke 22:24-30 (KJV)

24 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

25 And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

26 But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

27 For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

During the American Revolution, a man in civilian clothes rode past a group of soldiers repairing a small defensive barrier. Their leader was shouting orders, but did not attempt to help them. Asked by the rider why he did not assist the soldiers, the man retorted with great flourish: “Sir, I am a corporal!” The stranger apologised, dismounted, and proceeded to help the exhausted soldiers. The job done, he turned to the corporal and said, “Mr. Corporal, next time you have a job like this, and not enough men to do it, go to your commander-in-chief, and I will come and help you again.” The stranger was none other than General George Washington, America’s first president.

The disciples of Jesus engaged in an ill-timed and selfish argument about who among them should be accounted the greatest. Jesus had taken the Passover meal and created a memorial to His death, which we call the Lord’s Supper. He announced His impending death with this memorial. He also further revealed that one of His disciples would betray Him. Amid these seemingly serious challenges, the carnal pursuit of self-glorification was most important to the disciples. It betrayed their present state of mind and their selfish thoughts. Even more unbelievable was that they had this argument on the heels of the Transfiguration of Christ. This important event should have focused their attention more on heavenly things. Jesus cautioned the disciples against running an autocratic system similar to that obtained in the courts of despots and dictators of the world. He extols the virtue of humility and servant leadership.

What Christ, in His wisdom, cautioned His apostles against during His earthly ministry has now resurfaced among the clergy of our day. Jesus did not look gorgeous and sophisticated – one of the reasons those sent to arrest Him needed the services of an insider to make out who was the real Jesus among His disciples. Church leaders should be wary of ostentation, obsession with titles and offices. It is not the positions or offices we occupy that matter eventually; it is rather the selfless service we render to the flock of Christ that God recognises.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
True leadership is exemplified through service.
