All things being equal, a substantive chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) may emerge next week Wednesday. Indications that the party may fill the vacuum left by its former National Chairman Adamu Mu’azu emerged following the decision to hold its National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Wednesday next week.

Mu’azu resigned his appointment as the party’s chairman shortly after the defeat of former President Goodluck Jonathan at the March 28 presidential elections last year. Though Mu’azu hinged his exit on health and family considerations, it is believed that he bowed to pressure from stakeholders who insisted that having led the party to a dismal outing, he ought to leave office.

Incidentally, the party has been engulfed in crisis since Mu’azu left over who will succeed him.

The party appointed its Deputy Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus in an acting capacity, but former Political Adviser to former president Jonathan, Alhaji Ahmed Gulak went to court to challenge Secondus stay in office, and subsequently the court on December 16, 2015 ordered Secondus to vacate office in 14 days. It also struck out his (Secondus) stay of execution application filed at the Federal Capital Territory High Court and granted Gulak’s prayer that the North East, where Mu’azu hails from, should be allowed to complete their tenure.

The North East has since been shopping for a candidate to be presented and ratified by NEC at its next meeting. A meeting conveyed on February 2 in Gombe to pick a candidate ended in a stalemate.

Newswatch Times gathered that the North East will however present its candidate before the Wednesday NEC meeting in Abuja.

Rising from a meeting of the National Working Committee (NWC) yesterday, the party said the NEC meeting will discuss crucial issues and how to reposition the party.

A statement signed by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olisa Metuh yesterday in Abuja stated: “In view of the recent developments in the party, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled meetings of key statutory organs of the party.

“According to the schedule approved by the National Working Committee, the meeting of the National Caucus of the party has been slated for Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 7pm. It will be followed by the meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) on Wednesday, February 10. Ditto the NEC meeting.
