BIBLE TEXT: 1 Samuel 30:6-8 (KJV)

6 And David was greatly distressed; for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: but David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.

7 And David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, I pray thee, bring me hither the ephod. And Abiathar brought thither the ephod to David.

8 And David enquired at the Lord, saying, Shall I pursue after this troop? shall I overtake them? And he answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them, and without fail recover all.

RCCG Sunday School Teacher Manual 19 May 2024: Depression (Part 2)

LESSON INTRODUCTION: We are living in a world that is full of worries, depression, difficulties, issues, challenges, etc. either in the life of individuals, families, places of work, communities or nations. Everybody experiences different types of difficulty at one point in time. No matter the challenges you are facing, the best encouragement you can get comes from God. David encouraged himself in the Lord.

LESSON AIM: To make members understand that only God can make a way, so keep on encouraging yourself in the Lord.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to know:

  • those things that can bring discouragement.
  • the need to cast our cares on Him.

TEXT REVIEW: I Samuel 30:6-8

a. And David was greatly distressed after enemies attacked his family.
b. And David encouraged himself in the Lord his God.
c. When you are facing challenges, go to God for enquiry. d. For every enquiry made, as He inspires it, will bring recovery.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: WHAT CAN BRING DISCOURAGEMENT?

When we talk about discouragement, it means courage that is taken away and replaced with an unknown. There are so many factors in a man’s life that can lead to discouragement. All discouragement is from Satan or self, it is never from God because God is called “the God of all comfort” – II Corinthians 1:3.

CAUSES OF DISCOURAGEMENT

  • Fatigue: being worn out – Mark 4:38.
  • Frustration.
  • Fear.
  • Failure.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: CAST YOUR CARES ON HIM

Are you tired of wrestling over and over again over the same concerns? Has it aggravated to the point that it is beginning to weigh you down? Cast your cares on Jesus the Author and Finisher of your faith. There is no burden that we cannot cast on the Lord – I Peter 5:7.
These words are written to the suffering saints in the early Church who were experiencing intense suffering and extreme persecution not because they were living out of their faith. They were living in humility and righteousness. Peter wanted them to know that no matter what they were going through, all their worries and anxieties could be thrown on the Lord because He cares.

ACTIVITY: Look for someone whom you know is being discouraged and do all things to encourage them now.

SUMMARY: Discouragement is a weapon of the devil to attack your faith in God.

CONCLUSION: David encouraged himself in the Lord his God. He enquired at the Lord saying, shall I pursue after this troop? Shall I overtake them? And He answered him, Pursue: for thou shalt surely overtake them and without fail, recover all – 1 Sam. 30:6-8.
