TOPIC: Beware Of Negative Influence (Scroll down for RCCG House Fellowship 21 December 2025 Anthem)

OPENING PRAYER: Father, help me in choosing friends wisely in Jesus name.

PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The leaders should remind the members of the discussion on stewardship accountability.

MEMORY VERSE: “Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.” – 1 Corinthians 15:33 (KJV)

BIBLE TEXT: 2 Corinthians 6:14 (KJV)

14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

LESSON INTRODUCTION: We are warned to beware of negative influences because they can corrupt us. God says He will live and walk amongst us, and He commands us to stay away from ungodly people because they do not know God neither do they live by His Word, but have idols in their hearts (2 Corinthians 6:16-18). They do not seek God and are proud (Psalm 10:4). They live in the flesh and are not yielded to the spirit of God (Romans 8:7). As a result, they practice the works of the flesh (Galatians 5:19-21), which are contrary to the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23). The Lord Jesus Christ said we can identify people, whether godly or ungodly, by the fruit they produce, referring to their actions. In this lesson, we shall learn about the power of negative influence and how to avoid them.

LESSON AIM: To help members understand that fellowship with unbelievers can have a negative influence on a believer’s life.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be well
informed that:

  • Bad company corrupts good character.
  • Avoiding bad company will help a believer avoid defilement.

TEXT REVIEW: Luke 16:1-2.

  • Believers and unbelievers have no fellowship together.
  • Beware of ungodly people and avoid them.
  • Do not join with unbelievers, unrighteous and wicked people because they can corrupt you.

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: POWER OF NEGATIVE INFLUENCE: – 2 Samuel 13:1-5

A case study of Jonadab’s negative influence on Amnon.

The power of negative influence lies in its schemes and vices. We shall examine how Jonadab employed these schemes and vices to get Amnon to defile his sister.

  1. Evil desire – The problem of Amnon started with lust for his sister as he became obsessed with her, but he knew it was not right for him to have her (2 Samuel 13:2). Nevertheless, he turned to Jonadab, his ungodly cousin, for advice. Jonadab helped Amnon’s evil desires give birth to his sinful action (the vice of incest, when he slept with his sister) that led to his death. James 1:14
  2. Lies – Another scheme of the ungodly is lying. Jonadab told Amnon to pretend to be ill to get permission from his father to allow his sister cook for him. Jonadab loved evil more than good and lying more than righteousness. Psalm 52:3.
  3. Deceit -The scheme of deceit was the third scheme Jonadab employed for Amnon to deceive his father. Deceit is in the heart of those who devise evil, Proverbs 12:20a. He pretended to ask for food (2 Samuel 13:5), but what he desired was not the food but to sleep with his sister (2 Samuel 13:10-14).

The power of negative influence, as seen in this biblical account, turned an evil desire to sinful action, which resulted in death as stated in James 1:14. Beware of negative influence; it can kill you.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: AVOID NEGATIVE INFLUENCE

Now that we are well informed of the power of negative, we will be well advised to avoid it.

How can one avoid negative influence?

  • Renew your mind with the Word of God by meditating on the Word, day and night. Romans 12:2, Psalm 2:2, Joshua 1:8.
  • Keep your thoughts pure and Obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:4, Philippians 4:B
  • Avoid the ungodly and do not seek their counsel, Psalm 1:1. Ephesians 5:11
  • Abstain from all appearance of evil so you will not be brought under its power: 1 Thessalonians 5:22.
  • Beware of negative thoughts as they can attract negative influences which lead to sinful actions – Matthew 15:19-20.

SUMMARY: Beware of negative influences as they can lead to sinful actions, which result in death.

CONCLUSION: Negative influence has the power to corrupt and destroy anyone who allows it. God commands us to stay faithful to Him by separating ourselves from the ungodly to avoid being influenced by them. Therefore, separate yourself from negative influences to avoid sinful actions.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY: Discuss practical ways of avoiding the ungodly.
