LESSON INTRODUCTION: The Holy Spirit in 1 Timothy 4:1-3 warns us that there will be seducing spirits, evil doctrines, wiles of the devil, all these are deplored, seeking to derail believers from the path of truth. This is why Apostle Paul admonishes us in our memory verse to be sober and vigilant so that we will not fall prey to the devil’s antics.

LESSON AIM: To help members understand why the roaring of the devil is like a lion.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to:

  • Know who their enemy is.
  • Understand how to deal with the enemy, the devil.

TEXT REVIEW: 1 Peter 5:8-9.

  • Be careful, watch for attacks from the devil, your great enemy.
  • Devil prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for some victim to devour.
  • Take a firm stand against him and be strong in your faith.
  • Other Christians are also facing similar attacks and prowling from the devil

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: YOUR ENEMY HAS WILES – GENESIS 3:1-15

Wiles are tricks or manipulations designed to deceive, which the devil uses to make us think and act contrary to the will of God for our lives. The bible admonishes us to always be sober and be vigilant because our adversary the devil is seeking whom he will deceive with his wiles and eventually devour – 1 Peter 5:8-9. May we not fall into the hands of the devil through his tricks in Jesus name. The devil promotes false teachings and doctrines to lead people astray

Examples of the wiles of the devil:

a. Questioning God’s Word. Genesis 3:1-15, 2 Corinthians 11:3. Satan attacks our minds with questions that make us doubt our understanding of God’s word in Genesis 3:1, satan caused Eve to doubt her understanding of God’s instructions on the forbidden fruits to confuse her, Satan asked Eve “Did God really say?

b. Identity Conflict. Luke 4:1-13. The devil will always attempt to confuse every man of his identity in the Lord. The devil comes in subtly appealing to our emotions, desires and needs especially during physical, spiritual, emotional or financial crisis. Know your identity as someone that is more than conqueror.

c. False teachings, Doctrines and Prophesies. 1 John 4:1. In Matthew 7:15, our Lord Jesus warned us about false prophets that the devil uses to deceive Christians and make them compromise their faith. 1 kings 13:11-25, Matthew 24:11.

d. Spirit of Fear: 1 Timothy 1:7. Fear is another devise the devil uses to derail Christians from faith. 1 John 4:18 tells us that fear is a torment. When fear is introduced, it cripples sound judgement. For example, fear of death, fear of judgement. In Luke 22:54-62, it was fear of judgement and death that made Apostle Peter deny Jesus three times.

e. Deception: 2 Corinthians 11:14-15. Deception often exploits emotions (desire, lusts, etc) to cloud judgement and create confusion. By appealing to emotions, the devil can influence a person’s perceptions and decision-making processes leading to confusion about the truth. The devil presents false information or alters the truth to cause confusion about the truth.

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: DEALING WITH THE ENEMY

Ephesians 6:11 warns us to put on the whole armour of God so that we may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 1 Peter 5:8 advises us that the devil is very cunning and dangerous, we must therefore be sober and vigilant to win the war. The following are some of the weapons to overcome the devil and his tricks;

a. Helmet of Salvation: Matthew 5:16, Ephesians 6:17. Declare your identity as a child of God everywhere

b. The word of God: Ephesians 5:17. Hebrews 4:12. Word of God is a powerful weapon to destroy the devil and his darts. Spend time studying the word of God. 2 Timothy 2:15. John 17:1.

c. Avoid bad company :1 Corinthians 15:33. Evil association should be forbidden from the believer’s fold

d. Be Sober and be vigilant: 1 Peter 5:8. Be always on guard and submit yourself to God. James 4:7.

e. Be prayerful: 2 Corinthians 10.4. Prayer is a powerful weapon required to deal with the adversaries, deceptions, imaginations and their evil formation. 1 Thessalonians 5:17.

SUMMARY: The devil is on the prowl, looking like a roaring lion for whom he will devour, but he will continually fail if we heed the word of the Lord to be sober and vigilant. 1 Peter 5:8.

CONCLUSION: You must make up your mind not to be a prey in the hand of the devil and begin to use the armour that God has provided to overcome all wiles of the devil and quench all the fiery darts of the enemy. Ephesians 6:16.
