PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The leaders should remind the members of last week’s lesson on knowing God and living according to His will.
MEMORY VERSE: And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me. – Genesis 32:26b (KJV)
BIBLE TEXT: Genesis 32:24-29 (KJV)
24 And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25 And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26 And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27 And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29 And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: The encounter at Peniel was needed to change the direction of Jacob’s life, to bring to reality God’s promises concerning him. The encounter also helped to change a bloody encounter with his brother to a peaceful one, though not without a price, but greatly rewarding.
LESSON AIM: To help members understand what an encounter is and the impactful benefits.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to:
- Understand that the encounter is demanding but rewarding.
- Know the new beginning received through an encounter.
TEXT REVIEW: Genesis 32:24-29
- Being alone with God yields a remarkable and rewarding encounter.
- Being alone with God guarantees access to divine response to pending requests.
- Power to prevail is another benefits received when being alone with God.
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: DEMANDING BUT REWARDING
The encounter that will change our lives may not come easily. There are prices to pay for every height we desire to reach. Jacob needs to start a new phase of his life, which will launch him into becoming fathers of Nations but his name is a major stumbling block that needs to be changed. He wrestled with God in the form of a man and prevailed, and his name was changed from supplanter to Father of Nation. He took the following steps before the encounter:
- He Prayed Genesis 32:9-12
- He gave a gift, Genesis 32:13-15.
- He was alone with God, Genesis 32:24.
At bethel Jacob saw the house of God, where angels were coming down and going up through a ladder in his dream. But he needed a second encounter at Peniel, where he saw God’s face, and his life never remained the same.
LESSON OUTLINE TWO: BRINGS NEW BEGINNING
Peniel is a life-changing experience that redefines your life, when you come to the end of yourself, your struggles, your ways, or become dissatisfied with the status quo. Then you lay hold of God and refuse to let go until you experience a change, your old self dies and a new you emerges.
It is an experience that gives redefinition to your life – you discover your purpose, meaning and direction in life. It is not an emotion, but a tangible experience that is predicated upon your decision. A peniel experience brings you to the place in your life where you understand who you are and where you belong, then you refuse to adapt to where you are.
The encounter in Peniel (The face of God) brought these benefits:
a. Jacob reached brokenness. He lost all self-sufficiency and depended completely on God. Proverbs 3:5
b. New name at Peniel, – Isaiah 62:2
c. Repossession of generational blessings Genesis 49:25-26
d. A closer walk with God started in the life of Jacob at Peniel.
e. Time of genuine soul searching and spiritual struggle.
f. Time of knowing God’s grace. Jacob was alone with God.
SUMMARY: Being alone with God guarantees access to a divine response to pending requests.
CONCLUSION: A personal retreat affords you the opportunity to review and renew your strategies, it refreshes you and helps you to renew your strength. Go to Peniel today.
