OPENING PRAYER: Father, destroy every idol militating against my commitment to divine assignment.
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The leaders should remind the members on keeping fit both physically and spiritually.
MEMORY VERSE: For they served idols, whereof the Lord had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. – 2 Kings.17:12 (KJV)
BIBLE TEXT: Psalm 115:4, 135:15-18 (KJV)
Psalm 115:4
4 Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
Psalm 135:15-18
15 The idols of the heathen are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
16 They have mouths, but they speak not; eyes have they, but they see not;
17 They have ears, but they hear not; neither is there any breath in their mouths.
18 They that make them are like unto them: so is every one that trusteth in them.
LESSON INTRODUCTION: Idols are objects or persons that are not God but are worshipped as if they are God. People who worship idols are called idolaters. Examples of idol shrines and evil altars. Modern-day idols are money, gold, silver, football, fashion, music and their stars, habits, sex, alcohol, and drugs. Phone addiction, gambling, etc.
LESSON AIM: To help members understand what idols are and the effects of worshipping them.
TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to:
- Know why idols must be abolished.
- Know how to overcome idolatry.
TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 115:4, 135:15-18
- Their gods are merely man-made things of silver and of gold.
- Heathen worship idols.
- Idols are speechless and inactive.
- Those who make them become like them.
LESSON OUTLINE ONE: IDOLS MUST BE ABOLISHED – Isaiah 2:17-18
To abolish idolatry,
a. Acknowledge your sin, confess your sin and surrender your life to Jesus.
b. Admit and get rid of all idols in your life.
c. Fill your heart or mind with heavenly things.
d. Stay out of attractions to idols and the environment that can lure you back to idolatry.
e. Have God’s mind that idol never offers any positive inclusion to one’s life.
f. Engage in fellowship with Godly associates.
g. Put Jesus in the rightful place. Matthew 6:33
LESSON OUTLINE TWO: OVERCOMING IDOLATRY
- Reposition God in your life. God cannot accept second place in our lives.
- Contentment, inward sufficiency, wins the battle over idolatry. 1 Timothy 6:6
- Always get rid of unholy desire; it breeds love that lures one to idolatry. Colossians 3:5
- Inner discipline and self-examination. 1 Corinthians 11:31.
- Let your attitude be the same as Jesus had. Philippians 2:5-11
- Daily meditation on the word of God. Joshua 1:8
SUMMARY: Godliness with contentment is a great gain. 1 Timothy 6:6
CONCLUSION: Many have lost their true identity to idolatry, pursuing heartily treasures which have made them driven from divine plans, their gods are merely man-made things of silver and of gold, heathen worship idols which are speechless and inactive.
WEEKLY ACTIVITY: Let members discuss the idols people are worshipping in our society today.
PRAYER POINTS
- Father, fill our hearts with heavenly things that will populate God’s kingdom.
- Father, keep all believers out of attractions to idols.
- Father, sanitize our environment, make it godly and be freed from all forms of idolatry.
- Father, please engage our children in fellowship with Godly associates.
- Father, let Jesus sits in the center of our hearts.
GOLDEN DIET FOR THE WEEK
MONDAY: Modern-day idols are the pleasures of life, money.
TUESDAY: Beware of things that draw your attention away from God.
WEDNESDAY: Idols of nations are silver and gold.
THURSDAY: Anything that seems more important to you than God is an idol.
FRIDAY: Idols in the church can be comfort, power, approval and wealth.
SATURDAY: The desire to accumulate more and more things can be a strong idol for human beings.
SUNDAY: Remember, God is the source of all possessions and wealth, so be careful
