17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Some things in life of the broken appeal to God, and He gives them honour and grants their request. So God’s purpose for all believers is that we should be broken in heart, spirit and body.

TEACHING OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson, members should be able to: Know what it takes to be broken as Christians. Know the benefits of brokenness.

TEXT REVIEW: Psalm 51:17

  • The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit.
  • A broken and repentant heart God will not despise

LESSON OUTLINE ONE: QUALITIES OF A BROKEN CHRISTIAN

In this outline, we shall be looking at the qualities of a broken Christian.

a. GENUINE REPENTANCE: Proverbs 28:13. Genuine repentance says “I have done wrong and I’m here to say I’m sorry”, just like David did in Psalms 32 and 51.

b. RESTITUTION: If you have stolen, damaged or injured someone or something, or if someone has suffered loss because of your misbehaviour, an apology is not enough; justice demands that such a thing be repudiated. Whether it was done before or after conversion, just like Zacchaeus did in Luke 19:1-8.

c. FORGIVING HEART: Whenever we have been wronged, we should always forgive the person in our heart. Ephesians 4:32. In forgiveness, let us shun vindictiveness or desire to punish or suffer the offender; God hates an unforgiving heart. Matthew 18:23-35

d. ENDURING WRONG WITHOUT RETALIATION: This is a humble spirit that suffers for doing the right thing and does not retaliate. 1 Peter 2:23. All believers are called into this type of life. 1 Peter 2:19-20

e. PROMPT OBEDIENCE: God wants all believers to be broken in accepting and obeying His will completely, in full, not partially. Those who have an understanding of God and His ways will obey. Psa. 32:9

LESSON OUTLINE TWO: ADVANTAGES OF BROKEN HEART

i. A broken heart prefers others to himself or herself that is the reason God promotes them, they are motivated to serve others better than themselves.

ii. Broken people receive divine instruction, which enables them to be creative and productive. When Jacob became broken before Laban, he received information that delivered him from eternal servitude.

iii. They are eager for others to get the credit, and they rejoice when others are lifted. They know that the praise of others achievement belong to the Lord and that people’s criticism will help them grow into maturity.

iv. God is near to the broken people. Psalm 34:18

v. They are divinely preserved and secured.

SUMMARY: A broken and repentant heart God will not despise.

CONCLUSION: Brokenness produces true humility; until pride is broken, we will not humble ourselves before God and men.

WEEKLY ACTIVITY: Work on those vices that negate your fruitfulness as God’s vessel.
