BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:32-37 (KJV) (Scroll down for RCCG Sunday School 12 October 2025 HYMN)
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
INTRODUCTION: Some people have missed opportunities and failed woefully because they were ignorant of who they are. To know yourself is to have adequate knowledge of your personality and the power you wield as God’s child (Ephesians 1:18-19) through His word. It is to recognise your purpose and how to fulfil it with determination on your part. The awareness of who you are shapes the way you live and helps you to operate in confidence, knowing full well that you are royalty created to shine as a light out of darkness (Revelation 5:10).
LESSON OUTLINE
- THE MANUFACTURER’S MANUAL
- THE PLACE OF KNOWLEDGE
1. THE MANUFACTURER’S MANUAL
To know yourself is to first acknowledge God as your Maker and as a manufacturer. He has every tiny detail about you (Genesis 1:26-27). God told Jeremiah that He knew him before he was formed in his mother’s womb and He ordained him a prophet before birth (Jeremiah 1:51) Wisdom thus demands that we know God intimately to discern the reason we were created and see how to fulfil our reason for existence (John 15:5).
God is our creator and His manual is His word (the Bible.) This is why we must grow our word base by constantly feeding on God’s word (Psalm 1:1-2; 2 Timothy 2:15) and obeying it beyond face value (Psalm 119:11; James 1:23-25). The more of the Bible we read, the more life we get and the healthier, stronger, joyful, innovative, creative, etc. we become (Jeremiah 15:16; Proverbs 4:20-22).
2. THE PLACE OF KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is information. It is facts gathered about something or someone (1 Samuel 30:11-17; Proverbs 13:16). To know yourself is to have the understanding of your make-up, goals, aspirations, authority in Christ, etc. (Luke 10:19; Philippians 3:7-14). Furthermore, to know yourself is to recognise who you are and where you are headed. It is easy to get to where you are going when you are familiar with the way (2 Timothy 4:6-7).
To distinguish yourself, you need to have some relevant facts about your person such as; what turns you on and what irritates you easily, your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes and intentionality about success and how determined you are (Esther 4:16). What you understand about your emotions, desires, ability, etc. is also important (1 Corinthians 9:22; Judges 16:20). A personality trait test will also be of help.
When you know yourself, you know your strong areas, and it is easier to work on your weaknesses. and turn them into strengths. You are also able to know how far you can go and how to work and live with other people in peace.
CONCLUSION: To go far in life, you need a good understanding of who you are.

FURTHER READINGS:
Sunday: Judges 16:20 (KJV)
And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the Lord was departed from him.
Monday: 2 Timothy 4:6-7 (KJV)
6 For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. 7 I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:
Tuesday: Esther 4:16 (KJV)
Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan, and fast ye for me, and neither eat nor drink three days, night or day: I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.
Wednesday: Philippians 3:7-14 (KJV)
7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ. 8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Thursday: 1 Samuel 30:11-17 (KJV)
11 And they found an Egyptian in the field, and brought him to David, and gave him bread, and he did eat; and they made him drink water; 12 And they gave him a piece of a cake of figs, and two clusters of raisins: and when he had eaten, his spirit came again to him: for he had eaten no bread, nor drunk any water, three days and three nights. 13 And David said unto him, To whom belongest thou? and whence art thou? And he said, I am a young man of Egypt, servant to an Amalekite; and my master left me, because three days agone I fell sick. 14 We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire. 15 And David said to him, Canst thou bring me down to this company? And he said, Swear unto me by God, that thou wilt neither kill me, nor deliver me into the hands of my master, and I will bring thee down to this company. 16 And when he had brought him down, behold, they were spread abroad upon all the earth, eating and drinking, and dancing, because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines, and out of the land of Judah. 17 And David smote them from the twilight even unto the evening of the next day: and there escaped not a man of them, save four hundred young men, which rode upon camels, and fled.
Friday: Psalm 1:1-2 (KJV)
1 Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Saturday: Proverbs 13:16 (KJV)
Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly.
ASSIGNMENT: State five (5) important things you need to know about your life (2×5=10 Marks).
SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN
- O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friend friendship suits me well,
Both young and will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?
