BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Samuel 17:32-37 (NKJV)
32 And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine.
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The Lord that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the Lord be with thee.
INTRODUCTION: Some people have missed opportunities and failed woefully because they were ignorant of who they are. To know yourself is to have adequate knowledge of your personality and the power you wield as God’s child (Ephesians 1:18-19) through His word. It is to recognise your purpose and how to fulfil it with determination on your part. LESSON OUTLINE
- THE MANUFACTURER’S MANUAL
- THE PLACE OF KNOWLEDGE
LESSON OUTLINE 1: THE MANUFACTURER’S MANUAL
To know yourself is to first acknowledge God as your Maker and as a manufacturer; He has every tiny detail about you (Genesis 1:26-27). God told Jeremiah that He knew him before he was formed in his mother’s womb and He ordained him a prophet before birth (Jeremiah 1:5). Wisdom thus demands that we know God intimately to discern the reason we were created and see how to fulfil our reason for existence (John 15:5).
God is our creator and His manual is His word (the Bible.) This is why we must grow our word base by constantly feeding on God’s word (Psalm 1:1-2; 2 Timothy 2:15) and obeying it beyond face value (Psalm 119:11; James 1:23-25). The more of the Bible we read, the more life we get and the healthier, stronger, joyful, innovative, creative, etc., we become (Jeremiah 15:16; Proverbs 4:20-22).
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should share some of the discoveries they have made about themselves from the Manufacturer’s manual; the Bible.
LESSON OUTLINE 2: THE PLACE OF KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge is information. It is facts gathered about something or someone (1 Samuel 30:11-17; Proverbs 13:16). To know yourself is to have the understanding of your make-up, goals, aspirations, authority in Christ, etc. (). Furthermore, to know yourself is to recognise who you are and where you are headed. It is easy to get to where you are going when you are familiar with the way (2 Timothy 4:6-7).; Philippians 3:7-14). Furthermore, to know yourself is to recognise who you are and where you are headed. It is easy to get to where you are going when you are familiar with the way (2 Timothy 4:6-7).
To distinguish yourself, you need to have some relevant facts about your person such as; what turns you on and what irritates you easily, your strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes a intentionality about success and how determined you are (Esther 4:16). What you understand about your emotions, desires, ability, etc. is also important (1 Corinthians 9:22; Judges 16:20). A personality trait test will also be of help. A personality trait test will also be of help.
When you know yourself, you know your strong areas and it is easier to work on your weaknesses and turn them into strengths. You are also able to know how far you can go and how to work and live with other people in peace.
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Have you attempted a personality trait test before, what were your discoveries?
CONCLUSION: To go far in life, you need a good understanding of who you are.
EVALUATION: Mention four things you can do to gather more knowledge about yourself.
CLOSING PRAYER: Father, please help me to continually seek knowledge about who I am in Jesus’ mighty name.
ASSIGNMENT: State five (5) important things you need to know about your life (2×5=10 Marks).
