OPENING PRAYER: Dear Father, help me to develop ways to cope with loss in the mighty name of Jesus. (Scroll down for RCCG YAYA Sunday School 22 March 2026)
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.

BIBLE PASSAGE: Job 1:20-22 (KJV)
20 Then Job arose, and rent his mantle, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped,
21 And said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: the Lord gave, and the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.
22 In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.
INTRODUCTION: Loss is an inevitable part of life (Ecclesiastes 3:1-2, 4) that takes many forms, like the death of a loved one, broken relationships, major life changes, etc. (Job 14:1-2; 1 Samuel 30:1-4). The pain that accompanies loss can be overwhelming (2 Samuel 18:33), but how we cope with it determines our ability to heal and move forward. For a believer, the path to healing may involve practical coping mechanisms and the resolve to find comfort in God.
TEXT REVIEW: JOB 1:20-22
Job’s actions and statements in this passage show he possessed a strong mechanism to cope with loss and other challenges of life. It is equally amazing to note that his loss did not make him sim or charge God with wrong. V20.

LESSON OUTLINE 1: COPING MECHANISMS
A. i. The first step in coping with loss is to acknowledge the pain (Psalm 73:26).
ii. Allowing ourselves to feel the grief is essential for healing and accepting that our feelings are valid and not out of place to mourn (Job 3:24-26; 1 Samuel 30:3-6).
iii. We need to surround ourselves with a supportive community e.g., family, friends, support groups, etc.
iv. Having people to talk to can ease the burden of grief. Sometimes, knowing that others are there to listen can provide immense comfort (Job 2:11-13; 42:11).
B. In times of loss, the desire to continue daily routines may decline.
However:
i. Engaging in simple daily tasks can provide stability during an emotionally challenging time (Ruth 2:2).
ii. The weight of loss is too heavy to bear alone, and seeking professional help through counselling or therapy can offer a safe space to explore our feelings and develop strategies for coping (Proverbs 24:6; 11:14).
iii. In addition, finding healthy ways, such as journaling, tourism, art, music, or physical exercise, to express our griefs can be incredibly therapeutic because they allow us to process our emotions and alleviate the intensity of our grief.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Have you ever experienced loss, how did you cope?
LESSON OUTLINE 2: FINDING COMFORT IN GOD
A. Prayer is a powerful tool when grieving.
i. It provides a direct line of communication with God, allowing us to express our pain, confusion and sorrow.
ii. Prayer can be a source of solace, offering peace in times of turmoil (Philippians 4:6-7).
iii. In addition, the Bible is filled with verses that speak to loss and grief, offering comfort and hope.
iv. Psalm 34:18 says, “The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.”
v. This can serve as a reminder that God is with us in our pain and wants to comfort us in all troubles (2 Corinthians 1:3-4; Psalm 46:1).
B. Loss can often leave us questioning why it happened.
i. While it may be difficult to understand, trusting that God has a plan, even in times of suffering, can provide a sense of purpose and hope for the future (Romans 8:28; Jeremiah 29:11).
ii. Engaging with a faith community; whether through church services, prayer groups, or Bible studies, etc., can provide a sense of belonging, and be an immense source of comfort and support (Galatians 6:2, Hebrews 10:25a).
iii. It is also important to meditate on the promises of God (2 Corinthians 1:20, Matthew 11:28) and reflect on the eternal hope offered through Christ, knowing that death is not the end for those who believe (1 Thessalonians 4:13-14, Psalm 116:15). This perspective can bring peace.
CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Students should share how they have received comfort from God in times of loss.
CONCLUSION: Coping with loss is a personal journey. However, by embracing practical coping mechanisms and leaning on our faith in God, we can find the strength to overcome the pain.
EVALUATION: The student should explain what they will do in times of loss.
CLOSING PRAYER: Dear Lord, please give me the strength to cope with inevitable loss in Jesus’ name.
ASSIGNMENT: Identify someone who recently experienced a loss and provide support (No Marks).
