OPENING PRAYER: Father, teach me how to be a purposeful leader (Scroll down for RCCG YAYA Sunday School 6 July 2025)
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: The teacher should allow the assistant teacher to review the lesson for the previous week.
MEMORY VERSE: “In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity,” – Titus 2:7 (KJV)
BIBLE PASSAGE: Exodus 18:17-24 (KJV)
17 And Moses’ father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest is not good.
18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that is with thee: for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.
19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee counsel, and God shall be with thee: Be thou for the people to God-ward, that thou mayest bring the causes unto God:
20 And thou shalt teach them ordinances and laws, and shalt shew them the way wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
21 Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:
22 And let them judge the people at all seasons: and it shall be, that every great matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge: so shall it be easier for thyself, and they shall bear the burden with thee.
23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people shall also go to their place in peace.
24 So Moses hearkened to the voice of his father in law, and did all that he had said.

INTRODUCTION: To be intentional means to be purposeful. It is a deliberate action, making decisions and acting on what is important to achieve a specific outcome. A leader is an individual with a sense of direction, willing to take responsibility in guiding others into achieving a common aim. Intentional leadership is therefore a purposeful way of leading people into becoming who and what they have been divinely designed to become. Intentional leaders are those who are clear about their goals and purposes.

LESSON OUTLINES
- THE PORTRAIT OF AN INTENTIONAL LEADER
- THE EXAMPLE OF NEHEMIAH
1. THE PORTRAIT OF AN INTENTIONAL LEADER
The teacher should explain the following points:
- Intentional leaders are deliberate in their actions (1 Samuel 17:32).
- They ensure that their everyday actions align with a strong, well-articulated vision (Philippians 3:13).
- They are consistent in their beliefs and actions (Numbers 13:30).
- They get things done on time by meeting deadlines (1 Chronicles 12:32).
- They are flexible to connect godly practices with contemporary contexts.
- Intentional leaders make sure everyone on their team is going in the same direction and working toward the same objective.
CLASS ACTIVITY 1
Using the points discussed above, do a self evaluation and score yourself. Work on your areas of weakness.
2. THE EXAMPLE OF NEHEMIAH
Anyone can become an intentional leader like Nehemiah, who rebuilt the city wall in 52 days through his leadership style. We will look at some things that Nehemiah did that can guide us in our leadership roles.
- Take up the challenge. Just like Nehemiah intentional leaders must take up the responsibility to solve the problems staring them in the face. They must lead their team out of the issues at hand. Problem-solving skills are needed by every leader (Nehemiah 1:3-4a).
- Take inventory. As a good leader, follow up with the task at hand and look at things realistically. Nehemiah did not make any public announcements until he had done his homework of inspecting the broken walls in Jerusalem and the work to be done (Nehemiah 2:11-13).
- Be humble. Do not assume that you know or have all the answers. Come into every leadership situation with humility (James 4:10) and start by accurately assessing the problem. Learn to listen to those you are leading and pay attention to details. Good leaders need to activate their listening skills (2 Kings 6:1-3).
- Build a formidable team. Put together a strong team and have a strategic plan to delegate (Nehemiah 2:17-18; Exodus 18:17-24). In Nehemiah 3, we have a good model of teamwork and accomplishing much in a short time. Leadership and teamwork have a direct impact on our ability to accomplish goals.
- Pray for favour. Every leader needs favour to excel in their leadership journey. There is a need to pray to God for opportunities, open doors, breakthroughs, etc. Nehemiah prayed for favour with the king and for an opportunity to speak with him and God granted his desire (Nehemiah 1:11).
CLASS ACTIVITY 2
Is it position or power that makes people proud?
CONCLUSION
As an intentional leader, ensure you leave an indelible mark for generations to remember.
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, I receive the grace to be distinct as a leader in Jesus’ name.
ASSIGNMENT
Mention five (5) things you will do to improve your leadership skills (No Mark)
SUNDAY SCHOOL HYMN
- O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Thy friend friendship suits me well,
Both young and will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds be black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School. - O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?
