TOPIC: God Is With You (TREM Devotional 4 June 2025)

“And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him. Wherefore when Saul saw that he behaved himself very wisely, he was afraid of him. But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he went out and came in before them.” (1 Samuel 18:14 KJV)

MESSAGE:

An important attribute of a person who understands their position with God and that God is with them, is humility. Contrary to what we see in today’s ‘near-contemporary’ version of Christianity, the knowledge of God’s divine presence in some cases, makes some believers act recklessly and with impunity, forgetting that such behaviour is at variance to the very One they claim to represent.

David had been anointed king over Israel, yet King Saul still occupied the throne. To further complicate issues, David had recently defeated Goliath, consequently leading Israel to discomfit and annihilate their arch-enemies, the Philistines. The extent of this victory was on a scale like had never been witnessed since the drowning of Pharaoh’s army in the Red sea, to the extent that the women composed a song in David’s honour, that made of mockery of King Saul’s reign and achievements. The anointing, coupled with all of these achievements, was more than enough to make anyone pompous, proud, haughty and boastful, not least, an 18-year-old boy, who was just coming into his own, whilst dealing with the pressures of fame and stardom for the first time.

However, David was different; his overall attitude towards all of those life events was above what one would expect of a teenager. He demonstrated character beyond his age and expected maturity level. For a teenager, you would naturally expect some form of youthful exuberance that in some cases, would reveal a lack of maturity in dealing with issues, not least issues of such spiritual significance and importance. But David did not exhibit any of these negative traits and tendencies; why do you think so? The answer is clear; he had a clear understanding of the One who was with him. David was a wise, young man, and this wisdom was not a function of his age, but as a result of the depth of his relationship with God, which had been forged at the backside of the desert.

He knew that it was never about him, but always about God, and that he was a covenant person. David understood the implications of the covenant God had with Israel, reason why in his responses to both King Saul and Goliath, he always referenced the covenant. One of the implications of the covenant, was that God was with him, and that made him humble. His boast was in God and not in himself, such that even when he spoke about his killing the bear and lion, he made them in light of God’s hand of deliverance upon him, as a result of the covenant. Hence, he was humble and behaved himself wisely, circumnavigating the banana peels of his day with grace and great success.
