Winning Wisdom: Sin Weakens Faith

Topic: Sin Weakens Faith [13/9/2016]

Text: Hebrews 3:12-13

One of the things the continuous practice of sin does to us is that it weakens our faith and if not nipped in the bud, it finally rids us of the life of God – Zeo. Some people might say we can still continue living in sin and still be called Christians. That is not a truth we should embrace. Sin hardens the heart of man and at the end leads them to live in unbelief. Hebrews 3:12-13 says: “take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.  But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

God does not want this for us. That is why He enjoins to mortify our members which are upon the earth and He, through the Holy Spirit, wants to help us live a life devoid of sin. Apostle Paul said to Timothy in 1 Timothy  1:19 that he should hold his “faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck.” “Holding his faith” means that He should protect his faith from the deceitfulness of sin which keeps us from having a good conscience towards God and man, so that our faith will not be shipwrecked.

Sinful acts must be nipped in the bud and replaced with righteous acts. We are righteous and accepted before God because of Jesus and He will not deny us. But sin can harden our hearts and cause us to deny our faith in Him. Do not say “it is impossible”, because it can happen. Brethren, it can happen. But God does not want that to happen. That is why we must put to death every trace of the works of the flesh, through God’s Spirit in us (Romans 8:13).

Keep winning daily.

Prayer:
Dear Lord, I trust in Your Spirit to help me put to death every deed of the flesh. I know you don’t want me to be cut off from Your life. Work in me both to will and to do of your good pleasure always, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
