Topic: Lest We Forget [Monday March 7, 2016]
Text: Psalm 78:34-53
Key Verse: “When he slew them, then they sought him: and they returned and enquired early after God. Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues” (Psalm 78:34,36).
Mary was in the labour ward to have her first child. The nurses around were trying to ease her tension by cracking jokes with her. Immediately she entered the labour room, her mood changed and she suddenly became touchy.
It was not too long before the pain of labour became unbearable. In the agony of labour pain, she made several proclamations – including that after her first child, she would not have a child again. Contrary to her declaration during child birth, six months later, Mary was at the same hospital to register for antenatal. “Unbelievable!” One of the nurses shouted. “Human beings forget things easily”.
This was the case of the children of Israel. Anytime they went astray, God allowed them to be punished for their disobedience. In their suffering, they would call on Him and plead for His mercy. God is merciful and He did answer them. “But he, being full of compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not: yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath” (verses 38,39).
It is unfortunate today that many people only remember God when they are in difficulty. Going through a difficult situation makes them to become humble and therefore turn to God. Multitudes are seeking God today for solutions to their problems. But when those problems are solved, they do not only forget several promises and commitment they made to Him; they also forget His laws. Those who take God’s mercies for granted shut the door against future divine intervention.
Thought for the day: He who forgets God’s mercies shuts the door against future divine intervention.
