TOPIC: Choices And Consequences

READ: Haggai 1:7-11 (NKJV)

  1. Thus says the LORD of hosts: “Consider your ways!
  2. “Go up to the mountains and bring wood and build the temple, that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified,” says the LORD.
  3. “[You] looked for much, but indeed [it came to] little; and when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why?” says the LORD of hosts. “Because of My house that [is in] ruins, while every one of you runs to his own house.
  4. “Therefore the heavens above you withhold the dew, and the earth withholds its fruit.
  5. “For I called for a drought on the land and the mountains, on the grain and the new wine and the oil, on whatever the ground brings forth, on men and livestock, and on all the labor of [your] hands.”

THE MESSAGE:

Have you ever been in a position where you kept making efforts and giving your best but did not see the results you desired? Today’s passage from Haggai offers guidance when we find ourselves in such situations. The passage begins with God urging Israel to examine their actions and priorities. After they do this, God instructs them to “Go up into the mountains, bring down timber, and build my house”. God recommended a shift from observation to action because reflection without action can lead to stagnation. The Israelites experienced a lack despite their efforts (verse 9) and God explained this as a consequence of their focus on personal gain while neglecting His house.

This passage describes the drought and hardship the people experienced to be the result of their neglect (verses 10-11). When faced with challenges or a lack of fulfilment, take time to reflect on your actions and priorities. Ask yourself: Am I living by my values and commitments? Reflection should be followed by action. Identify the changes you need to make to align your life with God’s will, and actively pursue them. If you’re unsure where to start, seek guidance from trusted spiritual leaders, mentors, or faith communities.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, please give me the grace to retrace my steps and re-align my priorities, Amen!
