TOPIC: Acid Test!

READ: 1 John 2:1-6 (NKJV)

  1. My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.
  2. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
  3. Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.
  4. He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
  5. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him.
  6. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

THE MESSAGE:

The primary reason John wrote this letter is to discourage believers from living in sin because sin kills. We should never take our salvation for granted by living sinful and immoral lives. We must also not take God for granted by deliberately committing sin and believing that God will always forgive when we confess. Hebrews 10:26 tells us that if we deliberately continue to sin after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover our sins. However, since we are not perfect, if we sin at all, we must truly repent immediately and confess our sins to God. Verse 2 offers us reassurance of forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ who is the sacrifice that atones for our sins.

The evidence of being a Christian is not by posting on our houses and vehicles such stickers as “Believe it or not, I am a child of God” or “Whether you like it or not, I am born again”, etc. A good tree must always bear good fruit. The true evidence of Christianity is keeping God’s commandments which are summarized in love for God and for His people. If you love God, you will not intentionally sin against Him. If you love a fellow human, you must be careful not to offend him or her. Check your life again and confirm that you really love God.

PRAYER: Dear Lord, have mercy on me and incline my heart to keep Your commandments, Amen!
