MEMORY VERSE: God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. – Psalm 46:1 (KJV)

BIBLE PASSAGE: Nehemiah 4:6-9,16-18 (KJV)

Nehemiah 4:6-9
6 So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work.

7 But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth,

8 And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it.

9 Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.

Nehemiah 4:16-18
16 And it came to pass from that time forth, that the half of my servants wrought in the work, and the other half of them held both the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the habergeons; and the rulers were behind all the house of Judah.

17 They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.

18 For the builders, every one had his sword girded by his side, and so builded. And he that sounded the trumpet was by me.

INTRODUCTION: A crisis is an inevitable negative event that leads to a dangerous or unstable situation (Job 14:1). In everyone’s life, there is always a time when we come face to face with challenges, temptations, etc. Nevertheless, as believers, how we respond to these crises matters, as it is a clear reflection of how deeply we trust God and have faith in His word. For a child of God, being born again is no guarantee of a jolly ride on our journey of faith. It is important to learn how to manage a crisis in whatever form it may take.

LESSON OUTLINE

LESSON OUTLINE 1: FORMS OF CRISIS

a. Some crises are foreseeable while others are usually not anticipated (Genesis 41:29-31; Exodus 14:10).

b. For believers, it is not every crisis that is negative (Romans 8:28).

c. The following are some of the appearances crises may take:

  1. Spiritual Crisis: It is an experience that challenges one’s faith or sense of purpose and a time when one seeks deeper understanding (Job 10:1-8). Causes of spiritual crisis may include unanswered prayers, false teachings, doubts, etc. (Ephesians 4:14).
  2. Health crisis: This may come in the form of physical illness or death of a loved one (John 11:1-6, 11-21).
  3. Financial crisis: This is a situation where an individual, business or economy experiences severe financial distress (Mark 5:25-26; 2 Kings 4:1).
  4. Social crisis: Disagreements are bound to arise from divergent opinions and sometimes conflict of interest while relating with one another in society (Matthew 27:17; Exodus 32:1).
  5. Family crisis: It refers to a situation where a family faces significant emotional, psychological, or financial distress, disrupting their stability and relationship through divorce, infidelity, wayward children, domestic violence, etc. (1 Samuel 2:22-30; Genesis 27:32-41).

CLASS ACTIVITY 1: Students should mention other forms of crisis.

LESSON OUTLINE 2: HOW TO MANAGE CRISIS

A. It is wise to prevent foreseeable crisis (Proverbs 27:12). However, for the unforeseen, it is important to seek to properly understand the crisis by defining its nature, causes and implications for all concerned before attempting to solve it (2 Kings 2:19-21).

B. Pray and communicate the problems and solutions to all parties in a way that elicits their contributions to the solutions (Esther 4:13-17), and be willing to declare your God-inspired convictions during a crisis (Nehemiah 1:1-4; 2:1-5).

C. Take action with faith that, as a light (Matthew 5:14-16), every crisis is an opportunity to prove yourself as a solution provider (Genesis 41:32 41).

D. Monitor and review the progress on the actions taken (Nehemiah 4:19-23).

CLASS ACTIVITY 2: Have you ever faced a crisis? Kindly share your experience.

CONCLUSION: Believers should ensure the safety and well-being of all concerned in a crisis and that God is glorified.

EVALUATION: Students should mention ways they will manage a crisis.

CLOSING PRAYER: Dear Father, I receive the wisdom to manage all crises in Jesus’ name.

ASSIGNMENT: State five practical steps you took to manage a crisis (2×5=10 Marks).
