TOPIC — And Solomon Loved The Lord
READ: 1 Kings 3:1-5
1 And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the Lord, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
2 Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the Lord, until those days.
3 And Solomon loved the Lord, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that was the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
5 In Gibeon the Lord appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
THE MESSAGE:
The phrase, “And Solomon loved the Lord”, is a striking introduction to one of the most critical moments in biblical history. It occurred before the account of the divine encounter that would shape not only his kingship but also the legacy of wisdom he would become known for. The deliberate inclusion of this information in the narrative was to establish the foundation of Solomon’s respect for and fidelity to God. Solomon’s offering or sacrifice was the result of his genuine affection and love for God. Today, we support our doctrine of sacrificial giving with this passage, but we hardly go to the root of this offering, which is love for God. God is more interested in our relationship with Him and our motives, than the offering itself. He does not see the value of our offering when our hearts are not in alignment with Him and our neighbours (Matthew 5:23, 24). He does not even recognise martyrdom that is not out of love (1 Corinthians 13:3), let alone the offerings of bulls without obedience (1 Samuel 15:22-23; Psalm 50:13).
Beloved, we need to re-examine and ascertain whether heaven can say of us that we love the Lord. Will God attest to it that our actions and offerings are on the basis of our love for Him or something other than that? The best thing that can be said of a man is that he loves God.
PRAYER: Lord, when heaven shall write my biography, let it be said that I love the Lord.
