A towering 210ft cross – the biggest in the United States – is being built in Texas’ Corpus Christi.
The giant structure, which will also measure 95ft across, will cost $1 million and be based at the Abundant Life Fellowship campus off Interstate 37.

Once complete will be the second tallest cross in the world after the gargantuan Valle de los Caído in Madrid at 495 ft tall.

It will also stand ten foot higher than America’s current tallest cross in southern Illinois. The Cross At The Crossroad, based at the intersection of Interstates 57 and 70, measures just under 200ft tall.

Pastor Rick Milby, who founded the project, said God had begun speaking to him about erecting a ‘mega cross’ in Corpus Christi – which means the body of Christ.

One the Corpus Christi Cross Project website, he wrote that he was first inspired during a 2013 family vacation to Gaveston where he saw a giant white cross in the distance.

He claimed that God had begun speaking to him about erecting a ‘mega cross’ in Corpus Christi – which means the body of Christ.

On the project’s website, Milby said he had spoken to other churches connected to giant crosses which he claimed had saved lives.

‘They shared story after story about lives that were changed, suicides that were aborted, relationships that were restored because of the influence of the cross, reminding them that the redeemer could restore their brokenness,’ he wrote.

‘The cross is different than any religious symbol in that it points the way to the redeemer, Jesus Christ, who through His sacrificial death offers to all the free gift of eternal life by grace through faith.’

Corpus Christi’s cross will be constructed of 5/8” thick steel plate, mounted to a massive steel and concrete foundation which extends 48 ft below grade to stop it blowing over in the wind.

At more than 200ft high, it will be visible five miles away by land and ten miles my plane. The FAA requires it must have a light on top to warn passing aircraft of its presence.

Corpus Christi Mayor Nelda Martinez, council members and town authorities gathered at the site for a ground breaking ceremony on January 31.

A team is now taking samples at nearly 30ft deep to determine if the land can support the cross.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
