TOPIC: A Word Of Caution

READ: Jeremiah 28:10-17 King James Version (KJV)

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the yoke from off the prophet Jeremiah’s neck, and brake it.

11 And Hananiah spake in the presence of all the people, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Even so will I break the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all nations within the space of two full years. And the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

12 Then the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the prophet, after that Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying,

13 Go and tell Hananiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD; Thou hast broken the yokes of wood; but thou shalt make for them yokes of iron.

14 For thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; I have put a yoke of iron upon the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they shall serve him: and I have given him the beasts of the field also.

15 Then said the prophet Jeremiah unto Hananiah the prophet, Hear now, Hananiah; The LORD hath not sent thee; but thou makest this people to trust in a lie.

16 Therefore thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will cast thee from off the face of the earth: this year thou shalt die, because thou hast taught rebellion against the LORD.

17 So Hananiah the prophet died the same year in the seventh month.

THE MESSAGE:

Today’s reading is both for warning and encouragement. That some people oppose the true preaching of the gospel is not a new phenomenon. Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses (2 Timothy 3:8); Korah’s company (Numbers 16:1-3, 19-33); Bar-Jesus withstood Paul (Acts 13:6-11). These all paid for opposing God’s word and His servants. Hananiah opposed Jeremiah, gave a false prophecy and broke the wooden yoke on his neck. No doubt, the people would have applauded him and possibly mocked Jeremiah who went away without saying a word. God however fought back in order to protect His name and honour His word because within two months, Hananiah died.

As a user of this devotional, is God’s message that you are preaching being opposed like that of Jeremiah? Remain calm and leave God to defend His name and His word. Are you in the camp of Hananiah? Do you never see or hear anything good in God’s word being preached by your Pastor or others but will always be in opposition? Desist from it today before it is too late.

PRAYER: Heavenly Father, grant, we beseech Thee, repentant hearts to all those who oppose Your word and encourage Your faithful preacher by confirming Your word.
