TOPIC – Living By Faith, Not By Sight
READ: 2 Corinthians 5:1-7 (NKJV)
- For we know that if our earthly house, [this] tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.
- For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven,
- if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked.
- For we who are in [this] tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life.
- Now He who has prepared us for this very thing [is] God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
- So [we are] always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord.
- For we walk by faith, not by sight.
THE MESSAGE:
God’s creation of the entire universe and everything in it was a fragile process. This includes the nature of the human body. In fact, in this passage, Paul uses “earthly tent” to describe the human body. In contrast he also describes the new body to be received in eternity in stronger and more enduring terms. He says, “we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands” (verse 1b). What can we learn from these words?
While it is good and necessary to take good care of this earthly physical body, it is, however foolish, to do so while neglecting your soul which has eternal value.
Many today treat their physical bodies like a god, but treat their souls like a trash bin. Those who live by sight alone see their body and the physical things of this world as permanent and final, therefore, they invest their devotion, time, resources and loyalty to them, forgetting that time and circumstances will happen to these things and they will fade away.
This physical body will decay and be eaten by termites a few days after we die. But those who live by faith in Christ cherish their souls and invest in every possible way to maintain its health and sanctity, making it ready for its heavenly destination. Are you living by faith in Christ or by sight?
PRAYER: Lord, help me care well for my spirit.
