TOPIC: Why Accuse Jesus? (Anglican Devotional 21 April 2021)

READ: John 10:31-42 (NKJV)

  1. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him.
  2. Jesus answered them, “Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?”
  3. The Jews answered Him, saying, “For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God.”
  4. Jesus answered them, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, “You are gods” ‘?
  5. “If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken),
  6. “do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, ‘You are blaspheming,’ because I said, ‘I am the Son of God’?
  7. “If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me;
  8. “but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father [is] in Me, and I in Him.”
  9. Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.
  10. And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed.
  11. Then many came to Him and said, “John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true.”
  12. And many believed in Him there.

THE MESSAGE:

The Jews wanted to stone Jesus; He asked them why and they accused Him of blasphemy and making Himself God! Jesus quoted the scripture which says, “I said, you are gods” (Psalm 62:6) and wondered why the accusation since the scriptures had called people who read them “gods!” He challenged the unbelieving Jews to believe His works and that He works with His Father. The Jews were very angry at His response and wanted to capture Him but He escaped and went to stay beyond the Jordan. Many people came to Jesus there and believed in Him since they realised that John the Baptist was right about the Christ.

The Jews wanted to stone Jesus but the questions He put to them made them accuse Him of blasphemy. Jesus used His superior wisdom to diffuse their accusation and left them bewildered. Are you among those that accuse preachers of the Gospel and plan how to hurt them? In a world where there are many false prophets and preachers, one should be careful of one’s speech. Jesus told us that by their fruits we shall know them. Be sure of their fruits before accusing men of God of one thing or the other.

PRAYER: My Father; help me to be wise as I relate with Your servants and not to accuse them falsely. Amen.
