TOPIC – True Versus False Riches
READ: Proverbs 28:21-28 (NKJV)
- To show partiality [is] not good, Because for a piece of bread a man will transgress.
- A man with an evil eye hastens after riches, And does not consider that poverty will come upon him.
- He who rebukes a man will find more favor afterward Than he who flatters with the tongue.
- Whoever robs his father or his mother, And says, “[It is] no transgression,” The same [is] companion to a destroyer.
- He who is of a proud heart stirs up strife, But he who trusts in the LORD will be prospered.
- He who trusts in his own heart is a fool, But whoever walks wisely will be delivered.
- He who gives to the poor will not lack, But he who hides his eyes will have many curses.
- When the wicked arise, men hide themselves; But when they perish, the righteous increase.
THE MESSAGE:
A popular scheme in the world today is the get-rich-quick scheme! Even in the Church, prosperity-preaching anchored on Luke 6:38a can be heard more frequently than the call to repentance. It is used as a lottery ticket or investment that guarantees huge returns. But today’s passage teaches that it is wrong to rush after shortcuts to become rich, only to fall into errors (verses 21-23). Such shortcuts include favoritism, bribery, neglecting the needy, taking advantage of others, stealing, etc.
These all result in false riches and have consequences. True riches come from honest hard work and showing kindness and love towards others in need.
Are you in a hurry to be rich? Be careful that you do not run into trouble. Be on guard against all kinds of greed and shortcuts to wealth. Such wealth is false and does not last. Seek to be rich toward God thereby laying up treasure for yourself in heaven. Through honest hard work and love, built in your heart for the poor and needy, God will supply your needs (Philippians 4:19); and this will not be taken away from you. Instead of pursuing wealth that does not satisfy, seek first to be rich in the kingdom of God and to trust Him to meet your needs.
PRAYER: Dear Father, deliver me from greed and the love of money, Amen.
