TOPIC – The Vanity Of Horses
READ: 1 Kings 10:26-29
26 And Solomon gathered together chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he bestowed in the cities for chariots, and with the king at Jerusalem.
27 And the king made silver to be in Jerusalem as stones, and cedars made he to be as the sycomore trees that are in the vale, for abundance.
28 And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king’s merchants received the linen yarn at a price.
29 And a chariot came up and went out of Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, did they bring them out by their means.
THE MESSAGE:
A chariot is a two-wheeled vehicle drawn by horses used in ancient racing and warfare. Solomon had 1,400 chariots and 1,200 horsemen whom he kept in the cities and in Jerusalem. In ancient times, chariots and horses were a symbol of military strength and a kingdom’s power. Kings often trusted in their military resources such as chariots and horses to boost their strength. With 1,400 chariots and 1,200 horsemen, Solomon would have been sure of a solid defence.
Today, as Christians, our defence does not necessarily depend on the strength of our military weapons and strategies. It depends on the name of our God. No wonder, Psalm 20:7 says that some trust in chariots, and some in horses, but we will remember the name of the Lord our God. The physical, chemical and biological weapons of war can always fail, that is why we should completely trust in God. No wonder Proverbs 21:31 says that the horse is prepared against the day of battle, but safety is of the Lord. We learn from here that it is not wrong to make adequate preparations for our physical protection. It is a right to take precautions against any form of danger, but we must remember that all our efforts and preparations can only succeed with the help of God. Another sure way of getting protection is by living righteously. Proverbs 18:10 tells us that the name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous runs into it, and is safe. If you want God to protect you, you must depart from evil.
PRAYER: Lord, beneath the shadow of Your throne, make me to dwell secure. Deliver me from dangers and attacks, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.
