TOPIC: Fear Only The Lord

READ: ISAIAH 8:5-17 (NKJV)

  1. The LORD also spoke to me again, saying:
  2. “Inasmuch as these people refused The waters of Shiloah that flow softly, And rejoice in Rezin and in Remaliah’s son;
  3. Now therefore, behold, the Lord brings up over them The waters of the River, strong and mighty — The king of Assyria and all his glory; He will go up over all his channels And go over all his banks.
  4. He will pass through Judah, He will overflow and pass over, He will reach up to the neck; And the stretching out of his wings Will fill the breadth of Your land, O Immanuel.
  5. ” Be shattered, O you peoples, and be broken in pieces! Give ear, all you from far countries. Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces; Gird yourselves, but be broken in pieces.
  6. Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; Speak the word, but it will not stand, For God [is] with us.”
  7. For the LORD spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:
  8. “Do not say, ‘A conspiracy,’ Concerning all that this people call a conspiracy, Nor be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled.
  9. The LORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; [Let] Him [be] your fear, And [let] Him [be] your dread.
  10. He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense To both the houses of Israel, As a trap and a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
  11. And many among them shall stumble; They shall fall and be broken, Be snared and taken.”
  12. Bind up the testimony, Seal the law among my disciples.
  13. And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; And I will hope in Him.

THE MESSAGE:

From our text, it was expected that the people would be afraid of the predicted Assyrian invasion. They called it a conspiracy. This fear may lead to panic and taking of measures not approved by God. However Isaiah was warned by God not to fear or panic like the people but to only fear the Lord and be in dread of Him because He would be his sanctuary to safeguard him and at the same time, a stumbling block and a trap to the people of Israel and Judah (verses 12-13).

God never said that troubles or challenges will not come to His people. However, His assurances remain that in the midst of it, He will make a way of escape for His people. Is there anything you are presently afraid of? Is there anything you are panicking about? God’s assurance is that the challenge will not consume you. You will excel and sing songs of victory. God’s promise remains that, no matter what, “He will not leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13: 5). So, as God instructed Isaiah, don’t fear like the people because you are serving a living God! Victory is sure!

PRAYER: Lord, in the midst of life’s troubles, may I always look to You for help and rescue, Amen!
