TOPIC: Avoid Wrong Counsel

READ: 2 Samuel 10:1-5 (NKJV)

  1. It happened after this that the king of the people of Ammon died, and Hanun his son reigned in his place.
  2. Then David said, “I will show kindness to Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father showed kindness to me.” So David sent by the hand of his servants to comfort him concerning his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the people of Ammon.
  3. And the princes of the people of Ammon said to Hanun their lord, “Do you think that David really honors your father because he has sent comforters to you? Has David not [rather] sent his servants to you to search the city, to spy it out, and to overthrow it?”
  4. Therefore Hanun took David’s servants, shaved off half of their beards, cut off their garments in the middle, at their buttocks, and sent them away.
  5. When they told David, he sent to meet them, because the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, “Wait at Jericho until your beards have grown, and [then] return.”

THE MESSAGE:

Our text yesterday showed us the kind nature of King David to Mephibosheth which he also extended to Hanun the son of Nahash from where we read today, for the sake of his late father. David wanted a legacy of relationship with the generations of those who were good to him. But in this case, it was misunderstood. The princes of the children of Ammon gave a wrong counsel to Hanun saying, “Do you think that David does honor your father, that he has sent comforter unto you? Has not David rather sent his servants unto you to search the city and to spy it out and to overthrow it?” The wrong counsel he received led him to seize and humiliate David’s emissaries. David’s retaliation was brutal and devastating.

On one hand, we should be very careful over the kind of advice or counsel we give to people because it may cause them pain. On the other hand, we must rightfully discern the counsels we receive so that we don’t hurt ourselves and others. Some persons today are suffering because of wrong counsel that has destroyed their relationships, families and businesses. May God keep us from such error!

PRAYER: Whatever I am going through now because of wrong counsels, O Lord, turn it around for good in Jesus’ name, Amen!
