TOPIC: Freedom From Sin

BIBLE TEXT: Jesus replied, “Very truly I tell you, everyone who sins is a slave to sin…So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” – John 8:34&36

There is a bondage that is common to all,a debt that every human owes, a disease that we all suffer from and which no human strategy can ever conquer or cure. Primarily,it is not a bondage to external things, though it works its way out in external expressions. No, our problem is much deeper. It is bondage of the will, a captivity of the soul, a deadness of heart.

Man,by nature,is a sinner and sin, by nature,is a slave master. According to Jesus, in today’s text, anyone who sins is a slave to sin. Meanwhile,in Romans 3:23,we are made to understand that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. By the means of sin,man has fallen from the innocence in which he was created and become corrupted by sin.

The consequential penalty of sin is spiritual and physical death. Death reigns in all of us,we are all spiritually dead and will also die physically one day. Not only this, the effects of our sin infect everything we do. The marring stains of sin are pervasive within each one of us, distorting the way we think, desire, and behave. All of our thoughts, feelings, and actions are tainted by our sin.

Ultimately, the final consequence of our sin against God is hell, a state of total and unending disconnection and separation from God and all that is good, a place of unhindered and perpetual bondage to unrestrained evil, horror, and suffering resulting from everyone doing all their selfish and sinful hearts’ desires, no matter what harm it may cause to others.

To find solution to the problem of sin,God,in His love, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to rescue us from the bondage of sin. Jesus was offered as a sacrificial lamb, He died in the place of sinful humans like us to absorb all our sin, rebellion, and wrongdoing. Therefore, all who entrust their complete life to Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of their sins will be saved from their bondage to sin and given eternal life in Him. They will enjoy intimate and personal connection and relationship with God Himself.

This is true freedom and it only exists in Jesus Christ.

Beloved of God,to gain freedom from sin is to have a change of heart by the Holy Spirit. It is to possess a new heart that desires to love God. It is to accept Jesus Christ as one’s personal Lord and Savior. It is to forsake sin, shun evil and continue to live by faith in Christ Jesus. How freed are you?
