TEXT: Luke 4:14-21 (KJV)
14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
The word “independence” rings a positive note in all generations because it is about freedom. The quest for it can hardly cease because independence comes in different forms and levels. For instance, there is political independence – the freedom of a nation to govern itself without external control; personal independence – a person’s freedom to manage his or her affairs without being controlled by external forces; and financial independence – the ability to support oneself financially without relying on a job or income from others.
Today’s text highlights what may be regarded as the ultimate independence, much more desirable than the forms of freedom that people chase endlessly in life. When Christ, at the outset of His earthly ministry, appeared in a synagogue in Galilee after overcoming Satan’s temptations in the wilderness, He revealed His identity and mission. He came to set the captives free. He unrolled the sacred manuscript to read the lesson of the day, which turned out to be a passage from the prophecy of Isaiah that principally talked about the Messiah (Himself): “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.” He was, in essence, declaring to the Jews that He was the fulfilment of this prophecy.
Christ brought liberation to hopeless sinners and those oppressed by Satan. He preached the message of freedom from sin. He taught on how people can enter and flourish in the kingdom of God. He healed sicknesses of diverse nature and brought deliverance to those held captive by Satan. Talk of independence or freedom; no one is independent who is still under the oppressive control and domineering influence of sinful habits, Satanic manipulation, guilt and inner condemnation.
And the emphatic testimony of the Scriptures is that Jesus “went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil” (Acts 10:38). He is still liberating people today from the shackles of Satan, sin, sickness, and sadness through the power of the gospel. Irrespective of the enormity of your sins, the weight of the burden it has imposed on you, or the depth of despair into which you have sunk, if you turn to Christ now in repentance and faith, He will set you free from the judgement God has reserved for all who offend by their character and conduct. You should be wise and seize this moment to change the direction of your life.
