Text: Hebrews 11:26-29

Key Verse: “Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward” – (Hebrews 11:26).

”Myopia” is an eye disease of short-sightedness. It is the inability to see objects that are far off but can only see things around. As it is with the natural, so it is with the spiritual. ‘Spiritual myopia’ is the inability to see things from the eternal point of view. It is only concerned about “here and now”.

Moses had a choice to either enjoy the wealth and privileges Egypt offered as “the son of Pharaoh’s daughter”, or to “suffer affliction with the people of God”. But he forsook Egypt by faith and endured all things. He saw beyond Egypt. He knew there was something greater than the transient temporal privileges Egypt could offer.

Challenges arise in life but the attitude with which we face them makes the difference between joy and sorrow, success and failure. Those who can see ‘afar off’ understand that life here on earth is only temporal and therefore hold the things of this life with very loose hands. Moses’ choice to forfeit the pleasures of Egypt and to serve God and His people was a wise one that eventually made him one of the greatest prophets of the Most High. His inspired writings of the Pentateuch reveals who created man and how he was created. Without it, humanity would have remained blind as to who the Creator is and how He created all things. That decision granted him the honour of being personally buried by God who took him to heaven and gave him the privilege to appear with Elijah and the Lord Jesus on the mount of Transfiguration.

As New Testament believers, there are still very many choices and decisions to be made daily. The wise, like Moses, align with God and His ways while the foolish align with the flesh and the world. ‘Spiritual myopia’ must be avoided in taking decisions that will affect our eternal destiny. How far do you see today?

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: Wise choices lead to eternal joy.
