TOPIC: Vengeance For Distressing Israel (DCLM Daily Manna 24 November 2025)
KEY VERSE: “For the day of the LORD is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head” (Obadiah 1:15).
TEXT: Obadiah 1:10-16 (KJV)
10 For thy violence against thy brother Jacob shame shall cover thee, and thou shalt be cut off for ever.
11 In the day that thou stoodest on the other side, in the day that the strangers carried away captive his forces, and foreigners entered into his gates, and cast lots upon Jerusalem, even thou wast as one of them.
12 But thou shouldest not have looked on the day of thy brother in the day that he became a stranger; neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction; neither shouldest thou have spoken proudly in the day of distress.
13 Thou shouldest not have entered into the gate of my people in the day of their calamity; yea, thou shouldest not have looked on their affliction in the day of their calamity, nor have laid hands on their substance in the day of their calamity;
14 Neither shouldest thou have stood in the crossway, to cut off those of his that did escape; neither shouldest thou have delivered up those of his that did remain in the day of distress.
15 For the day of the Lord is near upon all the heathen: as thou hast done, it shall be done unto thee: thy reward shall return upon thine own head.
16 For as ye have drunk upon my holy mountain, so shall all the heathen drink continually, yea, they shall drink, and they shall swallow down, and they shall be as though they had not been.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
One of the things that sets God apart from man is his unimpeachable impartiality in all things, including when dealing with sin. He judges all who disobey His word alike, whether Jews or Gentiles. But in His mercy, He provides an opening for all willing to escape His judgment, if they turn from their sins and obey His word. Edom was unsympathetic to Israel, her relative. Edom mocked and worsened Israel’s problems. She was hostile and violent against the Israelites and rejoiced at Judah’s downfall, looted Jerusalem, and took her substance when she was defeated.
Edom stood on the crossway to kill the inhabitants of Judah who sought to escape and delivered the captives of Judah to be destroyed by their enemies. This was an act of cruelty that attracted God’s judgment. It is on record that in A.D. 70, after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans, the Edomites, who were then known as Idumeans, were wiped out into oblivion, never to be heard of again.
The lesson here is that God’s people should demonstrate the evidence of grace by sympathising with those who suffer around them, including enemies who become victims of misadventure. Believers like Christ must pray for those who despitefully use them, feed their enemies, and quench their thirst. Praying and wishing for the death and destruction of enemies is very strange to the Spirit of Christ, who dwells in us. Jesus never prayed that way.
Believers should be merciful towards their neighbours. Make life better for people while you maintain your Christian conviction. Put a smile on people’s faces and let others see Jesus in you. Never forget that God fights for, and avenges His people. To fight for ourselves and retaliate against those who offend us would be taking the law into our hands, and that would not please God. Allow the Lord to fight your battles, so that you can, like the Psalmist, declare that, “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.”
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
If you regard another’s downfall as your windfall, you’ll soon fall.
