Text: Job 29:12-25 (KJV)

12 Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.

13 The blessing of him that was ready to perish came upon me: and I caused the widow’s heart to sing for joy.

14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me: my judgment was as a robe and a diadem.

15 I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame.

16 I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.

17 And I brake the jaws of the wicked, and plucked the spoil out of his teeth.

18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, and I shall multiply my days as the sand.

19 My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch.

20 My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand.

21 Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.

22 After my words they spake not again; and my speech dropped upon them.

23 And they waited for me as for the rain; and they opened their mouth wide as for the latter rain.

24 If I laughed on them, they believed it not; and the light of my countenance they cast not down.

25 I chose out their way, and sat chief, and dwelt as a king in the army, as one that comforteth the mourners.

Key Verse: “Because I delivered the poor that cried, and the fatherless, and him that had none to help him.” – (Job 29:12)

MESSAGE:

Many foundations are in existence today; usually they are named after the founder and sponsor. Most of them are set up with reliable trustees to oversee the distribution of funds. It could be for the education of brilliant but indigent children whose parents lack the wherewithal to sponsor them in schools. Such assistance may cover secondary or university education or both. It might also be for scientific research, good governance, etc. It is always a way of ‘giving back to the society’.

Job’s philanthropic deeds were highlighted in the passage under review. He attested to the fact that he “delivered the poor that cried, and … caused the widows heart to sing for joy”. God did not create all fingers equal. He gives talents, some five, some two and some one, as it pleases Him. It is not good that while some members of the church are relatively swimming in affluence, there are some who cannot afford two meals a day.

The church must have a plan on how to help the poor. Idleness of any sort must be discouraged and those who have openings for jobs in their workplaces should help the brethren who have the relevant skills. Caring and support for the needy in the fellowship must be of cardinal concern to church leadership (Galatians 2:10). In the early Church, possessors of land and houses sold them and brought the proceeds to the church for distribution.

Like Job, let us learn to share with others our knowledge, gifts and possessions. We give not only to the brethren but also to “the poor, the maimed, the lame, the blind” (Luke 14:13). There is love in sharing, which also attract joy and rewards for time and eternity. Let us cultivate the good habit of sharing with others.
