Topic: The Saviour’s Evangelism Formula [Friday April 3, 2015]
Text: Matthew 4:23-25
Key Verse: “And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people” (Matthew 4:23).
Decapolis was region made up of ten cities in Syria of Bible times. Considering its mega city structure with enclosed walls that encouraged the people to gather in one place, it offered a very good setting for the delivery of the gospel to many people in one place. The Bible record about where we read today is that shortly after converting Peter, Andrew, James and John, our Lord Jesus Christ went where the multitudes were assembled to preach to them.
According to Matthew 4:25: “And there followed him great multitudes of people from Galilee, and from Decapolis, and from Jerusalem, and from Judaea, and from beyond Jordan”. Earlier, He had gone about all Galilee to preach and teach kingdom truths in their synagogues; He was also prepared to go as far as Syria where people “brought unto him all sick people that were taken with divers diseases and torments, and those which were possessed with devils, and those which were lunatick, and those that had the palsy; and he healed them.”
We learn from the Lord that itinerancy is part of the responsibilities of a preacher of the gospel. He must make the entire land his pulpit aside preaching in the church. But he must also go to meet the people wherever they are and satisfy their urgent spiritual need. That is the essence of the gospel project, DAWN – Discovering A Waiting Neighbour.
Jesus did not wait for them to come to Him first; nor did He concentrate on the synagogue. Thereafter, they trooped to Him for divine blessings.
Every believer should follow the Lord’s formula of Discovering A Waiting Neighbour.We must be Christ-like in carrying out the great commission (Matthew 28:19,20).
