Topic: His Sacred Promises! [Friday January 15, 2016]

Text: Romans 11:25-36

Key Verse: “For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance” (Romans 11:29).

Great monarchs of old pride themselves on the strength of their words, decrees and promises. Their words are so powerful that they are not carelessly uttered. Once they make a promise, their integrity lies on the strength and reliability of their promises.

Apart from monarchs, men of integrity in every age are respected for their ability to keep to their promises. A man is said to be a “man of his words” when he is known to be trustworthy and dependable. But we know that however sincere a man can be when he makes a promise, his limited human nature can make him to fail in living up to his words. But not with God! Whatever He promises, He also has the power to accomplish. No situation or circumstance places a limitation on Him. He does not suffer a mood-swing that makes Him oscillate on His promise. Also, God does not make a rash promise which He thinks He does not mean. He says what He means and means what He says. His promises are irrevocable.

This truth is revealed in His dealings with the children of Israel as revealed in our text. God specially chose the nation of Israel to be His people. He promised to always be with them and bless them as long as they obey. And when they sin, He would punish them by rejecting them. The purpose of this severe chastisement is to make them, on the long run, repent and return to Him. This promise remains unchanging. It is encouraging to know that we can rely wholly on God’s words and not fear that He may change His mind or fail us.

At the same time, we must bear in mind that His promises of judgment will not fail as well. While He has promised great blessings for those who live and walk in righteousness, He has also promised to judge all those who ignore Him and live in wickedness. These promises cannot fail.

Thought for the day: God never oscillates on His promises.
